Program Overview:

The SBY "Community Approaches to Rapid Engagement Services" (CARES) program is a new initiative that collaborates with MPD, OAG, and DHS to assist family units facing intra-family violence and seeking additional support for coping and problem-solving skills. The CARES Team delivers crisis response services at critical moments and guides families through a stabilization process, including a necessary "cool off" period.

Position Summary:

The Crisis Response Specialist will operate under the Family Strengthening Program and Bruce House Programs, providing shift coverage until an emergency call is received on our hotline, requiring the specialist to deliver on-site crisis intervention and de-escalation. This is a full-time role with hours from 2 PM to 10 PM, Tuesday through Saturday.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responds to emergency calls from MPD officers during incidents of intra-family violence; arrives within one hour of notification;
  • Delivers on-site crisis intervention; collaborates with MPD to de-escalate situations, assess needs, and formulate immediate safety plans;
  • Works with families and youth to create a Crisis Intervention Plan for the evening and arrange for respite if necessary; identifies alternative placements for youth unable to stay at home, including transportation;
  • Provides relevant coping skills information on-site;
  • Collaborates closely with MPD officers, Bruce House staff, and Family Strengthening Program personnel to ensure youth receive appropriate post-incident services; works with families and other agencies to assist youth in achieving their individual service plan goals;
  • Offers on-site supervision and counseling to youth in residence, employing positive behavior modification techniques and modeling effective de-escalation and problem-solving skills;
  • Engages youth in various activities, supporting them in achieving daily objectives and fostering productive dialogue, life skills development, and problem-solving; assists in planning and facilitating recreational, educational, and therapeutic activities;
  • Manages all phone calls and visitors, maintains house supervision, enforces house rules, and ensures safety; oversees the cleanliness and safety of the program; may perform light janitorial duties as needed;
  • Conducts regular inspections of the house and surrounding areas, checking individual rooms routinely;
  • Keeps accurate records, including comprehensive reports of house activities in the house log and daily point logs; all documentation must be submitted within 24-48 hours;
  • Implements emergency fire evacuation and procedures in case of illness or accidents;
  • Participates in required annual training mandated by licensing agencies or by the Program Director or Clinical Director;
  • Engages in regular supervision and staff meetings as directed by the Program Director;
  • Maintains all required clearances;
  • Performs other duties as assigned and demonstrates a commitment to ending youth homelessness, racial equity, inclusion, and the core issues central to Sasha Bruce Youthwork's mission.

Qualifications:

Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field such as Social Work, Psychology, or Human Services; Required: High School Diploma or GED with 3 to 4 years of relevant experience in Human Services or a related field (preferably working with adolescents/young adults);

  • Strong communication and organizational skills are essential;
  • All candidates must possess a valid driver's license, have reliable transportation, pass required clearances, and provide any necessary information regarding previous records.
