Duke Pediatric Respiratory Therapist Traveler Program

Position Overview

The Duke Respiratory Care External Traveler Program (ETP) offers short-term assignments lasting 13 weeks for qualified candidates to meet staffing requirements typically filled by external traveler Respiratory Therapists (RTs). RTs may be engaged for up to two consecutive 13-week contracts to address traveler RT needs at designated locations within the Duke University Health System. These positions do not include benefits.

General Responsibilities

Conduct diagnostic and therapeutic clinical procedures as outlined in the Respiratory Care Services or relevant clinical practice scope. Responsibilities are carried out in accordance with physician directives or established protocols, catering to neonatal, pediatric, and adult patient populations.

Key Duties

  • Administer oxygen therapy.
  • Deliver aerosolized medications.
  • Initiate and manage all forms of invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation.
  • Oversee artificial airways.
  • Conduct nasotracheal and artificial airway suctioning.
  • Perform CPR and bag-mask ventilation.
  • Monitor pulse oximetry.
  • Execute arterial blood gas punctures.
  • Conduct bedside pulmonary mechanics assessments.
  • Engage in diagnostic cardiopulmonary procedures and pulmonary function tests.
  • Transport patients within the facility.
  • Ensure proper setup, safety, and functionality of all equipment and supplies required for patient care.
  • Adhere to all infectious disease protocols in the delivery of patient care.
  • Recognize life-threatening situations and respond appropriately.
  • Understand pharmacological indications, dosages, and adverse drug reactions.
  • Conduct patient care assessments following accepted protocols.
  • Provide education to patients, families, physicians, nursing staff, and other healthcare team members.
  • Monitor patient responses to therapies.
  • Document all relevant information in the patient medical record.
  • Communicate all pertinent clinical information effectively.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Administer advanced ventilation techniques including high-frequency jet ventilation and oscillators.
Qualifications

Education:

Completion of a 2-year CoARC accredited respiratory care program (Associate's Degree or equivalent).

Experience:

A minimum of one year of experience as a Respiratory Therapist is required. Preference will be given to candidates with two or more years of experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist.

Licensure and Certification:

North Carolina State Licensure or Provisional License,

Certification by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) for graduates. Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and any other relevant certifications required by the institution (ACLS, BLS, PALS).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to make informed clinical decisions and interactions based on the specific age of the patient.
  • Validation of skills and competencies for the responsibilities of this role.
  • Must meet annual skill and safety compliance requirements.
  • Must fulfill North Carolina annual license continuing education requirements.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Work involves interaction with patients of all ages, family members, physicians, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Work is conducted in various areas of Duke Hospital.
  • Physical demands may include lifting or pushing over 30 pounds.
  • Work may require walking, climbing, and bending.
