Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates the operations of all Messer's North American business units to achieve favorable results in safety, reliability, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and customer satisfaction.
  • Provides technical assistance for analytical instruments and systems across all Messer locations in North America, including advanced troubleshooting, coordinating repairs, and managing contractors related to analytical equipment/systems.
  • Offers subject matter expertise on gas analyzers, providing technical guidance during Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOP), Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) reviews, and risk assessments.
  • Possesses familiarity with various types of analyzers, sensors, and technologies, including in-depth knowledge of Gas Chromatographs.
  • Designs and engineers analytical systems for new installations and upgrades at existing Messer facilities, including during major outages.
  • Oversees the installation, commissioning, and functional verification of new analytical instruments and systems, ensuring they are fit for purpose and validated as required.
  • Specifies new analytical instruments and systems.
  • Maintains knowledge of relevant industry standards and practices concerning analytical instruments and systems, including guidelines from the International Society of Automation (ISA) and the International Society of Beverage Technologists (ISBT).
  • Develops standards and policies related to analytical instruments and systems.
  • Explores, tests, and assesses new analytical technologies to provide technical advantages over existing practices, enhancing reliability.
  • Manages the strategy for analyzer and analytical system spare parts, including budgeting, specification, purchasing, and inventory management.
  • Oversees analyzer upgrades, including strategy development, budgeting, specification, purchasing, and installation.
  • Conducts studies related to analytical instruments and systems to foster new business opportunities and sustain existing customer relationships across all divisions/groups.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline is mandatory.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience, with at least 5 years in an operational and engineering context.
  • Strong communication skills, capable of engaging with all organizational levels.
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Proven leadership in operational safety.
  • Demonstrated capability to see projects and solutions through to completion.
  • Ability to challenge existing processes and enhance current programs.
  • Expertise in analytical methods and equipment selection for process control and product quality assurance in industrial gas applications.
  • Proficiency in analytical system design and integration, including sampling, calibration, control automation, and data acquisition.
  • Extensive experience in the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of analyzers and analytical systems.
  • General knowledge in instrumentation, controls, and networking is preferred.
  • Experience in Root Cause Analysis, Cause and Effect, or Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) methodologies is essential.
  • Solid understanding of regulatory and industry standards and codes.
  • Experience and knowledge in Air Separation processes are preferred.
  • Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) is required, with SAP PM being preferred.
