As a Medical Laboratory Scientist specializing in the Blood Bank, you will collaborate with a dedicated team, reporting to Lead Medical Lab Scientists, Assistant Chief Technologist, and Lab Manager. In this role, you will exhibit proficiency in executing a diverse range of routine and specialized technical procedures within the Blood Bank Laboratory. Your responsibilities will include managing and processing specimens, accurately reporting test outcomes, and maintaining patient data within the laboratory information system. Additionally, you will be tasked with the careful selection and modification of blood products, ensuring precise issuance and distribution. Strong time management, organizational, and communication skills are essential in this position. You will interpret data based on your expertise and experience, troubleshoot and resolve routine issues, and engage in quality control, quality assurance, and equipment maintenance initiatives in the laboratory. Your efforts will contribute to the safe and timely delivery of transfusion therapy.
Key Responsibilities:
- 1. Technical Proficiency: Exhibit technical skill in conducting both routine and complex testing, ensuring quality control, and managing component selection and preparation.
- 1.1 Adhere to established guidelines for blood product and sample handling, as well as standard safety precautions.
- 2. Effective Communication: Facilitate the accurate and efficient flow of information within the Blood Bank by demonstrating strong communication, recordkeeping, computer, and documentation skills, along with a commitment to customer service.
- 2.1 Provide precise information and effective communication during patient handoff to the Blood Bank team. Document significant information in communication logs promptly and review them regularly.
- 3. Laboratory Support: Undertake additional laboratory support tasks to ensure reliable operations within the Blood Bank.
- 3.1 Perform various ancillary functions in support of laboratory operations as directed by supervisory personnel and Laboratory physicians.
Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology or an equivalent field.
Experience:
One (1) to two (2) years of experience in an accredited Clinical Laboratory is preferred.
Licensure:
MT (ASCP) or BB (ASCP) certification or eligibility is required.
Special Skills:
Proficient knowledge of laboratory equipment, instrumentation, serological testing, blood product components, and materials utilized in a Clinical Laboratory.
Physical Demands:
Ability to stand and/or sit for extended periods during high-volume operations. Capability to lift 25 lbs. and manage the opening and closing of sample carriers. Familiarity with computer systems and medical terminology is essential. Typing experience is required. Exceptional customer service skills, including communication, telephone, and interpersonal skills, are necessary. Attention to detail is critical, along with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively. Flexibility in scheduling may be required.
