Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Respiratory Therapist to join our team at DMC Children's Hospital of Michigan. As an ECMO Specialist, you will be responsible for setting up, troubleshooting, and monitoring patients on prolonged life support equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • ECMO Equipment Management
    • Prepare the ECMO machine for placing patients on the ECMO process
    • Prime and safety check equipment and assist in connecting patient to circuit
    • Monitor patients receiving ECMO treatment and equipment
  • Patient Care
    • Adjust rates of blood and gas flow through heart-lung machine based on interpretation of patient vital signs and laboratory results
    • Determine heparin levels in blood by measuring activated clotting times
    • Document information relative to patient care during ECMO and communicate patient's condition to physicians and staff
  • Departmental Responsibilities
    • Maintain departmental patient records and forward appropriate information to national registry
    • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and maintain and check for optimal functioning on a regular basis
  • Leadership and Training
    • Assist in the development of protocols and in ECMO training of Senior Respiratory Therapists
    • Assist in conducting in-services with employees to communicate updates on ECMO and to maintain technical knowledge of equipment and procedures
    Requirements
    • Graduation from an AMA/CoARC approved Respiratory Care program
    • Registration by the National Board for Respiratory Care and current CHM ECMO certification
    • Licensure to practice as a Respiratory Therapist by the State of Michigan
    • Two to three years of experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist
    • BCLS certification required
    • ACLS certification preferred
    • PALS certification preferred
    Preferred Qualifications
    • ECMO background strongly recommended
    • Skills related to the care of critical infants on life support equipment
    • Leadership skills including demonstrated willingness to pursue leadership roles with increasing levels of accountability
