Position Overview

The Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine is seeking a full-time, open rank, non-tenured faculty member with a comprehensive background in biochemistry or physiology. This role is pivotal in shaping the education of osteopathic medical students. The primary focus will be on delivering high-quality instruction in the relevant field throughout a two-year preclinical curriculum.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Delivering engaging instruction in Biochemistry or Physiology utilizing a variety of teaching strategies, including traditional lectures, active learning, small group discussions, and innovative instructional methods.
  • Providing guidance and mentorship to medical students as they progress through their academic journey.
  • Contributing to the academic mission of the institution by participating in strategic committees and engaging in service within local and national professional communities.
  • Advancing scholarly activities, which may encompass medical education research, independent scientific inquiries, clinical or translational research, and other scientific initiatives.
  • Executing additional job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Oversight of student workers.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Terminal degree (PhD or equivalent) with significant expertise in biochemistry, physiology, or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrated excellence in educational practices, with substantial teaching experience in higher education, medical education, or health sciences.
  • Evidence of a growth mindset, as shown by the ability to respond constructively to feedback from peers and students.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment, valuing collegiality and mutual support.
  • Commitment to providing innovative and high-quality education in biochemistry or physiology to future healthcare professionals.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interest and experience in specific areas of expertise that can be discussed during the interview.
  • A minimum of two years of teaching experience in an osteopathic medical education context, or at least four years in another health sciences academic environment.
  • Experience with innovative, evidence-based teaching methodologies, including team-based learning, flipped classrooms, problem-based learning, and distance learning.
  • Familiarity with instructional technologies and Learning Management Systems.
  • Experience in instructional design and aligning educational objectives with curriculum standards.
  • Knowledge of educational theory, evaluation, and assessment methodologies.
  • Proficiency in medical exam item writing (COMLEX-style and/or USMLE).
  • A track record of scholarly contributions (publications, presentations, grant writing, etc.).
  • Evidence of service involvement within an academic institution (e.g., committee participation, task force involvement, etc.).
  • Experience in academic advising and mentoring medical students throughout their educational journey and residency match process.
