Crime Victim Support Specialist

Position Summary
This role is dedicated to providing professional and administrative support, serving as a vital link between the judicial system and the community. Responsibilities include initiating contact with victims of crime and offering essential information, referrals, and assistance to those in need, whether they reach out in person or via phone.
Key Responsibilities
The following are examples of the types of tasks performed in this position. The absence of specific duties does not exclude them from the role:
- Engage with crime victims to inform them about court proceedings and any changes to scheduled hearings.
- Assist victims in obtaining Temporary Protective Orders and connect them with community resources for further support.
- Collaborate with the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council to facilitate aid and restitution for victims.
- Prepare case files for prosecution, ensuring all necessary reports are collected and organized.
- Investigate and compile information regarding restitution; notify victims of court dates through mail and phone communications.
- Support grant writing efforts and manage grant administration.
- Prepare victims for the experience of testifying in court.
- Communicate with various agencies to address the needs of crime victims.
- Provide administrative support, responding to inquiries both in person and over the phone, while maintaining organized files and training support staff.
- Collect and file reports for relevant committees.
Additional Responsibilities
Employees in this role may be expected to perform any related duties as assigned by the District Attorney or authorized personnel.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Understanding of the principles and techniques for effectively interacting with crime victims. Familiarity with relevant Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
Proficiency in operating modern office equipment.
Ability to engage tactfully and effectively with the public.
Capacity to listen and maintain open communication with individuals who may be experiencing distress.
Ability to manage potential hostility and verbal abuse with professionalism.
Capability to learn, interpret, and apply relevant laws and regulations.
Ability to foster positive relationships with colleagues, attorneys, judges, and crime victims.
Work Environment
This position typically operates in a standard office setting, with occasional home or on-site visits. The described work environment characteristics are representative of those encountered while performing the primary functions of this job, with a generally moderate noise level.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate's degree in social work, sociology, criminology, or a related discipline.
- One year of experience working directly with crime victims.
- Alternatively, a combination of education, training, and experience that meets the requirements outlined above.
- Victim Assistance Training (VAT) Certificate is required.
