Job Overview

Position Summary: This role entails executing a comprehensive array of law enforcement responsibilities within various divisions of the Sheriff's Office. Duties may encompass patrol, civil enforcement, crime deterrence, community engagement, investigations, transportation, court security, administrative support, or corrections. The individual may be temporarily assigned to specialized areas based on operational needs. A certified deputy sheriff may hold the rank of Certified Deputy I, Certified Deputy II, or Certified Deputy III, contingent upon qualifications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Patrol Duties:
    • Uphold law and order while safeguarding lives and property.
    • Respond to dispatch calls, conduct investigations, and take appropriate actions.
    • Perform security assessments of businesses, parks, public facilities, and residential areas.
    • Manage traffic control through observation and speed detection methods.
    • Detain and assess drivers suspected of impaired driving.
    • Issue citations and/or execute arrests for legal violations; compile incident reports.
    • Attend court proceedings to testify on cases investigated or reports authored.
    • Respond to both natural and man-made emergencies.
    • Transport detainees securely.
    • Locate defendants and execute criminal warrants.
    • Assist with crowd management and security at public events.
    • Report hazardous conditions on public roadways and conduct surveillance.
    • Provide assistance and information to the public regarding victim's rights.
    • Collaborate with code enforcement.
    • Conduct investigations of vehicular accidents and prepare related reports.
  • Jail Responsibilities:
    • Process, search, and book inmates into appropriate facilities.
    • Safeguard inmates' personal belongings and maintain security in jail areas.
    • Transport inmates for external activities and conduct inspections.
    • Oversee inmates' daily routines, including meals and medication distribution.
  • Civil/Warrants Duties:
    • Determine effective methods for legal process service.
    • Schedule and efficiently route processes for service.
    • Execute court-issued writs and manage property seizures.
  • Community Engagement:
    • Maintain peace in schools and community settings.
    • Investigate incidents, gather evidence, and complete reports.
    • Prepare and deliver presentations in educational and community environments.
  • Court Security:
    • Ensure safety and security within court facilities.
    • Escort prisoners and maintain order during trials.
  • Administrative Support:
    • Perform maintenance on Sheriff's Office facilities and vehicles.
    • Assist with administrative tasks and research as needed.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Understanding of law enforcement principles, criminal investigation, and public safety.
  • Familiarity with legal statutes and regulations pertaining to law enforcement.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Capacity to remain calm and make sound decisions in emergency situations.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate records and reports.

Work Environment: The position may involve both office and fieldwork, requiring the ability to handle stressful situations and operate in various settings, including secure facilities.

Minimum Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent; a degree in a related field is preferred.
• Must be a U.S. citizen and possess a valid driver's license.
• Certification as a Peace Officer is required.
