Research Associate - MCG Medicine

Job Summary

The Research Associate plays a pivotal role in facilitating advanced administrative and technical functions that support research initiatives within a designated laboratory or clinical research unit. This position involves active participation in the collection and documentation of research data in accordance with FDA regulations and institutional protocols, as well as the development and assessment of innovative research methodologies and procedures. The role encompasses a variety of intricate chemical, biological, cytological, microscopic, histological, surgical, clinical, and dissection tasks.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Engaging in project planning and formulating research protocols to ensure compliance with established scientific research standards and human assurance regulations.
  • Evaluating research experiment outcomes and procedures through manual or computational techniques; may involve creating specialized software to enhance analysis.
  • Drafting articles for publication in scientific journals and reviewing submissions from colleagues.
  • Participating in the physical examination, testing, and treatment of study participants for research purposes; documenting vital signs and obtaining tissue or fluid samples for further analysis.
  • Providing guidance to principal investigators, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and other research staff on research methodologies and technological aspects of research activities.
  • Performing various administrative tasks such as procuring equipment and supplies; maintaining equipment schedules, record-keeping, and ensuring cleanliness.
  • Overseeing and coordinating the activities of students, graduate assistants, and other personnel involved in research projects and laboratory work.
  • Instructing and participating in complex bacteriological, chemical, and radio-chemical qualitative and quantitative analyses, as well as histological and cell culture procedures.
  • Calibrating, troubleshooting, repairing, and operating sophisticated scientific equipment; training others in the use of this equipment.
  • Conducting literature reviews related to scientific research; summarizing and evaluating findings; developing derivative applications based on personal research or reported findings from other projects.
  • Executing all other job-related duties as required.


Qualifications

Required: A Master's degree from an accredited institution in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology, or a related field, along with experience in research, basic science, or clinical laboratory settings, particularly in clinical trial research. Alternatively, a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field with a minimum of three years of research and/or clinical experience, including prior supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in social or behavioral science research, particularly in public health, is advantageous.

Skills and Abilities

Strong customer service, interpersonal, multitasking, organizational, and verbal/written communication skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software/databases. Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, meet deadlines despite interruptions, maintain attention to detail, uphold confidentiality, keep accurate records, and make independent decisions.
