Schedule: Pool 1 - 4 shifts per month, 8-hour shifts.

As a key member of our therapeutic team, the Experiential Therapist I is responsible for the development, planning, implementation, facilitation, direction, and evaluation of engaging therapy programs across various specialized treatment areas. This role requires a strong educational background and experience in collaborating with interdisciplinary staff and community resources. Documentation within the designated program is essential.

The ideal candidate will possess a diverse skill set in experiential media and have a comprehensive understanding of the psychosocial dynamics of patient/resident groups. The role encompasses the application of expressive activities within a psychiatric environment, including adventure-based and environmental activities, sports, dance, group initiatives, arts and crafts, music, outdoor activities, psychodrama, horticulture, and challenge courses.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, and assess programming across all specialized treatment areas.
  • Support the daily operations of the department in the absence of leadership.
  • Oversee and evaluate student interns.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of psychosocial functioning and the application of expressive activities in a psychiatric context.
  • Utilize recreational activities to assist patients/residents in applying recovery skills taught in protocol sessions.
  • Deliver personalized treatment within a group environment.
  • Possess awareness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills.

Education and Training Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in art, music, dance, recreation, or related therapeutic fields. A Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Certification or registration through the appropriate credentialing board is preferred.
  • A valid driver’s license in the state of employment is necessary for specific assignments.
  • CPR certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross is required within thirty days of hire, with annual re-certification.
  • Formal training in managing aggressive patients is required within sixty days of hire, with annual re-certification, including self-defense training.
  • Completion of Ropes and Challenge Course training by Rogers Memorial Hospital, with yearly renewal as applicable.
  • For those working in Child/Adolescent Day Treatment programs, at least one year of educational or work experience and relevant licensure or certification is required when serving children with mental health disorders.
  • Compliance with Residential Care Centers (RCC) and Community Based Residential Facility (CBRF) employee training requirements is applicable for Experiential Therapy pool and fixed FTE staff dedicated to a residential cost center.
