General Overview:
As an integral member of an educational team, the Communication Support Specialist's primary objective is to enhance a child's communication skills, which are essential for successful educational experiences. Under the guidance of the designated Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), the CSS will execute ongoing speech and language programs and services. The CSS will engage with students exhibiting a wide array of communication challenges, including language disorders, speech sound disorders, fluency issues, voice/resonance concerns, and support for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems. This role provides services to students with speech and language requirements as determined suitable by the SLP and within the professional scope of practice for a Communication Support Specialist.

Qualifications:
To successfully fulfill this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to perform each essential duty effectively. The qualifications listed below represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities required.   • Associate degree from an accredited program for speech language pathology assistants.
  • Proficiency in online software platforms, email, internet navigation, spreadsheets (Excel), word processing (MS Word), and assistive technology is essential.
  • Licensure through the appropriate state board for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
  • A personal vehicle is required for travel within the assigned geographic area.
  • Bilingual candidates are preferred.

Essential Functions:
The following tasks may be performed, but are not limited to:
  • Ensure all students receive high-quality, culturally, and linguistically responsive services.
  • Exhibit awareness and sensitivity regarding language acquisition among diverse populations.
  • Provide interventions under the supervision of the SLP that are tailored to the age and learning needs of individual students, selected through evidence-based practices in accordance with IEP/IFSP documentation.
  • Conduct speech and language screenings without interpretation, following protocols specified by the supervising SLP.
  • Implement various service delivery models in the least restrictive environment for students with disabilities, including pull-out and in-class support.
  • Address social, academic, and vocational needs that influence the achievement of educational goals.
  • Support students in utilizing augmentative communication devices.
  • Assist with scheduling and maintain accurate records and data, including Medicaid billing if applicable.
  • Conduct hearing screenings as necessary.
  • Provide direct intervention assistance to students as identified by the supervising SLP, following IEP or protocols established by the SLP, excluding feeding/swallowing.
  • Document student progress toward meeting established objectives as outlined in the IEP and report this information to the supervising SLP.
  • Assist the SLP with informal documentation during intervention sessions, including data collection and preparation of materials.
  • Collaborate with the SLP in data collection for assessment purposes without interpretation.
  • Sign and initial treatment notes for the supervising SLP's review and signature.
  • Maintain knowledge of licensure guidelines and requirements for Communication Support Specialists, ensuring compliance with supervision standards in collaboration with the supervising SLP.
