Position Overview

The Campus Safety Officer role is integral to the Patrol Operations within Campus Safety. Officers serve as the primary safety and security personnel for the University, with responsibilities that encompass patrolling the campus and its facilities while assisting the campus community with various issues and concerns. Multiple positions will be filled from this posting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts patrols of designated areas, physically inspecting buildings and checking doors, windows, entries, and exits for safety.
  • Responds promptly to fire alarms.
  • Communicates with and assists fire and police divisions, as well as other public safety entities.
  • Provides initial response to emergencies and criminal incidents on University property; conducts preliminary investigations to ascertain outcomes.
  • Offers general assistance to the campus community and visitors.
  • Apprehends violators of city, state, and federal laws and regulations occurring on or involving university property.
  • Operates University patrol vehicles and radio equipment as assigned.
  • Completes written reports and maintains logs related to campus activities.
  • Serves as the Division dispatcher, managing incoming service calls, monitoring fire and intrusion alarms, dispatching officers to calls, and overseeing CCTV systems on campus.
  • Adheres to all Division and University policies, procedures, directives, rules, and regulations.
  • Participates in the interview panel during the Division's selection and hiring process when requested by Senior Management.
  • Engages in the Division's recruitment and accreditation efforts.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of hiring.
  • Must possess a High School diploma or GED.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid driver's license and be insurable under University guidelines; or obtain a valid driver's license within the required timeframe.
  • Must successfully pass a written job-related skills examination.
  • Must pass a comprehensive background check, including criminal history, motor vehicle report, and verification of employment and education.
  • Must complete a pre-employment physical, drug screening, and human performance evaluation conducted by a University-approved physician.

Post-Hire Employment Requirements

  • Must be able to obtain or possess a City and County of Denver Security Guard License within three weeks of hire.
  • Must successfully complete initial certification in Basic First Aid/CPR/AED, Defensive Driving, and Threat Pattern Recognition (TPR) Use of Force Basic within three weeks of hire.
  • Must maintain re-certifications in Basic First Aid/CPR/AED and TPR to ensure job-related skills are up to date.
  • Must complete an annual physical assessment test as part of TPR re-certification to maintain job-related physical fitness standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or equivalent credit hours in Criminal Justice, Police Science, or Security Management; or 6+ months of related law enforcement/Campus Safety experience and/or training; or a combination of education and experience.

Work Environment

As field-based personnel, Campus Safety Officers regularly work outdoors in all weather conditions. This position may involve various shifts as determined by senior management. Officers are considered essential personnel and may be required to work additional hours to cover shifts or provide special event coverage.

Physical Requirements

All personnel required to have a City and County of Denver issued Security Guard License must successfully pass a job-related human performance evaluation as part of a conditional offer of employment. This evaluation will assess the following:

Lift/Carry: Transfer traffic cones (10lbs) over a distance of 5 feet.
Carry: Transfer fire extinguisher (15lbs) from wall cabinet to area of need within 5 minutes.
Lift/Carry: Transfer traffic barricades (27lbs) over a distance of 10 feet.
Push/Pull: Open/Close parking lot roll gates; must open building doors (15lbs) within 5 minutes.
Push/Pull: Drag incapacitated person out of harm's way (65 lbs.) within 5 minutes.
Climb: Access 10th floor of campus interior structure during emergencies when elevators are locked out; must patrol stairways; must pass performance-related test (60 steps in under 5 minutes).
Climb: Access rooftop hatches and rooftops of parking lots (17 times in under 5 minutes).
Dynamic Posture: Respond to first aid/medical assist calls, perform CPR, and reach down to the floor (1 from floor) within 5 minutes.

Specific vision abilities required include correction to 20/30 vision, close vision, distance vision, night vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Must also possess the ability to hear for safety reasons inherent to the essential functions of the job. Must maintain fitness standards to ensure the ability to physically apprehend and detain suspects, provide emergency and protective services, and conduct other physically demanding assignments. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, run, climb stairs, and routinely lift and/or move 50 pounds. During emergencies, this position may be required to move incapacitated individuals away from dangerous circumstances.

Work Schedule

This is a non-exempt position; 40-hour work week with varied hours during a 24/7 schedule. Officers assigned to Patrol Operations participate in a seniority-based shift bid and may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

Salary Information
The salary grade for this position is 6, with an hourly rate of $23.00. The University of Denver provides a compensation range that reflects its good faith estimate of potential pay for the position at the time of posting. The final salary offered will depend on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and market information, without regard to a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
