About Our Job

The City and County of Denver is seeking highly skilled and dedicated law enforcement professionals to join our team as Lateral Police Officers. As a Lateral Police Officer, you will play a critical role in promoting public safety and protecting the lives and property of our citizens.

Job Responsibilities

As a Lateral Police Officer, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Representing the Denver Police Department and the City and County of Denver to the community
  • Patrolling assigned sectors, precincts, or areas, familiarizing yourself with businesses, public facilities, and the community
  • Suppressing crime through collaborative relationships and community involvement
  • Protecting and preserving life and property
  • Investigating criminal activity
  • Apprehending and arresting violators of criminal law and implementing traffic laws
  • Making detailed reports of all occurrences and responding to police calls in your area
Qualifications

To be eligible for this position, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Possess a current Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification or state equivalent
  • Not currently under Internal Affairs investigation for any reason
  • Have a minimum of two years of law enforcement experience performing calls to service or street duty (Patrol Experience) while employed full-time at the time of application

Additionally, you must be currently employed full-time as a state-certified law enforcement officer by a state, county, or municipal police or sheriff's department, or have been laid off or retired within the last twelve months and have been in good standing at the time of layoff or retirement.

  • All patrol districts are on ten-hour shifts with three consecutive days off
  • Full salary and benefits start day one of the Denver Police Academy
  • Longevity pay starts at five years
  • The availability to work various off-duty assignments for extra pay
  • Vacation starts at 112 hours per year
  • 144 hours of sick leave per year
  • ASL (Accumulated Sick Leave) - after five years of employment, unused sick time can be built up to a saved bank of 144 hours which can be used as additional vacation time
  • Shift Vote is once per year. You vote for your shift and vacation in November and start in January of the next calendar year. The shift and vacation you vote for are yours for the calendar year
