About the Role:

The Transportation Engineering Specialist provides technical expertise and quality assurance support for the annual Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP).

This role involves evaluating plans and engineering documents for quality and adherence to MCDOT Standards, assisting the Standards and Review Engineer in maintaining MCDOT's Standards, and contributing to the development of standards related to the implementation of OpenRoads Designer.

This position represents the journey-level classification within the registered civil engineering series; incumbents are tasked with complex assignments that require technical proficiency and the ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment within established technical and procedural boundaries.

Qualifications Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field
  • Three years of professional engineering experience in transportation projects
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Arizona State Board of Technical Registration or by the technical board of another state, with the ability to obtain Arizona Registration within six months of employment
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire and maintain an acceptable driving record
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with MicroStation, InRoads, OpenRoads, and BlueBeam
  • Familiarity with the Maricopa County Department of Transportation Standards
  • Experience in engineering designs for roadway or drainage-related projects
Key Responsibilities:
  • Review plans and engineering reports for quality and compliance with MCDOT Standards using Bluebeam
  • Assist the Standards Engineer with updates to the MCDOT Roadway Design Manual, Standard Specifications, Standard Details, and Bid Item Master list
  • Support MCDOT Designers with project-specific special provisions
  • Facilitate the development of CADD Standards, sample plan sheets, civil cells, CADD tools, and the implementation of Bentley OpenRoads Designer
  • Collaborate with MCDOT's Designers to create QA/QC tools for In-House designs
  • Assist MCDOT's CADD Group and Designers with the implementation of Bentley software such as OpenBridge Designer/Modeler and Subsurface Utilities
  • Complete design projects, including scoping reports, construction plans, specifications, and estimates.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned
Working Conditions:

Exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or negligible amounts constantly; primarily sitting with occasional walking or standing for extended periods.

The position is generally office-based, but fieldwork may be required. Incumbents may encounter extreme temperatures (hot or cold), wind, rain, traffic hazards, respiratory hazards, and noise and vibration.

Equipment and Software:

Motor vehicle, computer workstation, CAD Software, Bluebeam, Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams, and calculator.

Protective Equipment Required:

Hardhat, safety vest, steel-toed boots, safety glasses.
