Position Overview:
The Program Assistant collaborates with the Senior Resource Educator on various educational initiatives focused on citizen science and supports a range of field and laboratory research activities.

Key Responsibilities:
This role includes serving as the site coordinator for volunteer surveys related to horseshoe crab spawning, aiding in shellfish aquaculture, and participating in other field restoration and educational efforts.

As a site coordinator, you will be tasked with gathering scientific data during the annual horseshoe crab spawning surveys, which typically occur over 12-15 evenings in the spring months. This involves working in pairs to count, measure, and tag spawning horseshoe crabs while educating volunteer participants.

Additionally, you may lead casual participants interested in a one-time educational experience regarding horseshoe crabs and the associated programs.

This position also encompasses laboratory work at the Flax Pond Marine Lab, including evaluating horseshoe crab embryo development and assisting with field experiments related to ribbed mussels in Jamaica Bay. Responsibilities will also include processing samples and maintaining equipment at the laboratory.

Other potential projects may involve telemetry-based fieldwork for horseshoe crabs, which may require boat operations, as well as contributions to shellfish aquaculture and groundwater programs. Some scuba diving or snorkeling may be necessary for these tasks.

The shellfish aquaculture program involves collaboration with a Shellfish Biologist in both hatchery and grow-out facilities, where you will assist in data collection related to shellfish and water quality, as well as help maintain display tanks and engage in public education efforts.

Qualifications:
Required:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions.
- Capability to work independently or as part of a team with minimal supervision.
- Knowledge in natural, plant, or marine sciences.
- Physical ability to lift 40 lbs and manage heavy equipment.
- Flexibility to meet travel requirements and work varied hours, including evenings and weekends.

Preferred:
- Experience in biological data collection.
- Familiarity with established monitoring protocols and accurate data recording.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a passion for environmental stewardship.

Compensation:
Hourly wage ranges from $15 to $35, based on experience and qualifications.
