As a member of the nursing team at Hoag Memorial Hospital's Nursing Staffing Office (Float Pool), you will provide direct inpatient care in accordance with the California Nurse Practice Act, supporting the mission of the Patient Care Services Division. Serving as a Clinical Nurse I at Hoag means contributing to our community by utilizing research and evidence-based practices, collaborating with your team to deliver the highest standard of care to those in need.

Inside Hoag's Float Pool

Our Staffing Office offers three tiers of nursing support to the hospital based on expertise and patient acuity: Float I, II, and III. As a Float I nurse, your primary responsibility will be to deliver direct patient care across various medical/surgical units, including: Oncology, Pulmonary, Gynecology/Urology, Surgical, and Telemetry. The patient demographic includes adults and geriatrics with medical, surgical, oncological, cardiac, and/or neurological conditions. You will also have the opportunity to float between different hospital locations, receiving an additional 5% to your base pay rate.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducting and documenting comprehensive physical assessments, nursing interventions, patient education, and discharge planning for assigned patients, adhering to documentation guidelines and Standards of Care.
  • Communicating any changes in patient conditions to the Charge Nurse/Supervisor and the physician overseeing care, as well as sharing relevant information during shift reports using the patient Plan of Care (POC).
  • Administering medications and intravenous therapies, ensuring appropriate indications, dosages, and monitoring effects of administered medications.
  • Evaluating the educational needs of patients, integrating available educational resources into patient and family instruction, and documenting comprehension in the patient record.
  • Providing emotional support and care for adult/geriatric patients and their families facing significant life changes and end-of-life issues, while coordinating with Social Services, Pastoral Care, and Case Management.

Required Qualifications:
  • Active California RN License.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications.
  • Successful completion of an EKG course or equivalent.
  • A minimum of two to three (2 to 3) years of clinical nursing experience in a Medical Surgical/Telemetry unit.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). If you do not possess a BSN upon hire, you will be required to enroll in a BSN program within one year of your hire date and obtain your BSN within two years of starting the program.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • BSN.
  • Certification in a nursing specialty.
  • Additional skills and knowledge of various equipment and software may be beneficial.
