Position Overview

Role Summary

Under the guidance of the Managing Attorney and in collaboration with the staff attorney, the Educational Law Advocate will assist clients in navigating special education services while engaging in outreach efforts, including within community clinics.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct initial and follow-up interviews with clients, both in-person and via phone, as well as at outreach events.
  • Respond promptly to client inquiries, assess their needs, schedule appointments, and manage a substantial caseload.
  • Collect, review, and organize educational and medical documentation pertinent to education-related cases.
  • Represent clients in school meetings, including virtual and in-person Individualized Education Program (IEP) discussions.
  • Facilitate community outreach and educational initiatives.
  • Support clients during school meetings and administrative hearings.
  • Perform basic factual investigations and legal research as required.
  • Draft memorandums, letters, and standard legal documents for attorney review.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with local educational institutions, county agencies, and social service organizations.
  • Ensure compliance with all programmatic and grant-related requirements.
  • Assist the team with administrative tasks as necessary.
  • Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and other relevant activities.
  • Complete additional tasks as assigned by management.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or an Associate's degree with a paralegal certificate from an accredited program, or equivalent experience demonstrating strong writing, analytical, and research skills.
  • Ability to effectively gather information from clients through interviews, both over the phone and in person.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with clients in a calm, empathetic, and professional manner, guiding discussions to relevant issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Capacity to work independently while also contributing to team objectives, ensuring timely completion of grant deliverables and reporting.
  • Reliable transportation is required.
  • Excellent organizational skills to manage individual caseloads.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Fluency in Spanish, both written and spoken, is preferred.
  • Experience in client service roles, including intake, interviews, and legal research, or familiarity with related systems, laws, and regulations.
  • Commitment to serving low-income populations.
  • Aptitude for working effectively with diverse communities, including individuals facing cultural or language barriers, as well as those with physical or mental disabilities.
  • Background in education law or education is preferred; candidates without this background should outline their plans for preparation if selected.

Compensation and Benefits:

The Educational Law Advocate position is hourly, with a pay range of $22.53 to $30.77, starting at $25.28. Additional bilingual pay increases are available for proficiency in threshold languages.

LASSD offers a comprehensive benefits package, including a 35-hour workweek, paid vacation and sick leave, and fully employer-paid medical premiums, along with dental, vision, and life insurance options. Employees may also participate in a 403(b) retirement plan and flexible spending accounts (FSA). LASSD provides a law school loan repayment program and qualifies for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.
