Electrical Inspector Job Description

Job Summary:

Applies standard inspection procedures to ongoing activities during and after construction and installation, upgrades, retrofits, and quality assurance of proper methods and procedures for electrical components general safety and conformance to plans, specifications, and local and national codes.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform constructability reviews of designs
  • Demonstrate skills with thorough knowledge of procedures, practices, installation, and testing methods, as well as of the National Electrical Code
  • Provide assistance with field investigations for arc flash data collection and ground grid testing
  • Research electrical equipment standards and specifications, design equipment layout and coordination with process mechanical, produce circuit and panel schedules, conduct engine generator sizing using vendor software
  • Perform electrical calculations including arc flash, short circuit, system coordination, voltage drop, equipment sizing, and research and design to the current National Electrical Code
  • Coordinate and supervise project inspection activities to ensure contractor compliance of plans, contract documents, specifications, and standards
  • Assign, schedule, and maintain subordinate inspection staff throughout all phases of the project
  • Work on behalf of the Client to draft project correspondence, facilitate project meetings, and resolve construction-related field issues
  • Gathers and maintains record documents
  • Makes field notes and computations
  • Interact with the general public, government agencies, contractors, sub-contractors, and other internal and external parties to respond to inquiries
Requirements:
  • Must successfully complete and pass JMT's Motor Vehicle screening
  • Knowledge of NEC requirements for industrial and commercial installations
  • Knowledge of NFPA 70E
  • NEC knowledge shall include working clearances and access, and conduit and conductor sizing
  • Knowledge of practical means and methods for electrical and instrumentation installation, testing, and commissioning
  • Ability to review and respond to submittals and RFI's
  • Ability to understand Electrical, Instrumentation, and P&ID drawings
  • Good technical skills with the ability to articulate ideas and concepts both visually and contextually
  • Effective oral and written communication
  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently use standard computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Bluebeam or PDF writer, and Outlook
  • Adapt to and use company tools and systems in place to monitor project budget and schedule
  • Take ownership of assigned project work to see work product through to the end of delivery
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associates or bachelor's degree in Construction Management or Civil Engineering
  • Supervisory experience in construction management/inspection situations
  • Ability to act in an Owner's Agent/Responsible in Charge role
Working Conditions:

Work is performed in the field. Ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs as needed. Work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.
