Job Summary

The Food Service Assistant is responsible for assisting in the preparation and sales of food items in a school cafeteria and/or speed line unit(s), as well as maintaining food service equipment and facilities in a safe, clean, and sanitary condition.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the preparation, packaging, and serving of food.
  • Wash dishes and kitchen equipment.
  • Assist in requisitioning, receiving, and storage of foods and supplies.
  • Maintain proper care of equipment and sanitation of the kitchen.
  • Act as cashier, collecting money, making change, and counting totals.
  • Assist in the preparation of foods such as sandwiches, salads, salad dressings, entrees, snack foods, and desserts.
  • Portion food into individual servings per established guidelines; wrap and/or package food items for snack bar/speed line sales.
  • Slice, assemble, mix, stir, blend, and/or measure a variety of ingredients used in food preparation activities.
  • Set up serving counters/lines, food carts, and food warmers with appropriate food items and supplies as assigned.
  • Package and store leftovers.
  • Perform cashiering duties; operate a cash register or use a cash box, add total to be charged, receive money, make change, and collect meal tickets.
  • Inventories food on hand after meals/service, restock food items and supplies as needed.
Requirements
  • Experience: Prior job-related experience in food preparation, serving, and basic kitchen activities is desirable.
  • Skills: Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations, operate and care for institutional kitchen equipment.
  • Knowledge: Knowledge of modern methods of food preparation, health codes, and sanitation principles.
  • Abilities: Ability to stand for prolonged periods, understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Qualifications
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Possession of a valid California Driver's License, Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance, negative pre-employment drug screen test, and negative TB test results.
