Job Summary

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is seeking a highly skilled Safety Manager to oversee the development, implementation, and communication of comprehensive safety programs across the organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and manage safety policies, procedures, and regulations to ensure compliance with OSHA standards and District rules.
  • Collaborate with operating and support departments to foster a safety culture and promote accountability for safety programs.
  • Supervise the analysis, development, and communication of new and revised safety rules, programs, and regulations throughout all plant and office areas.
  • Conduct regular inspections of machinery, facilities, and buildings to ensure they are in safe operating condition and comply with applicable safety regulations.
  • Analyze and investigate all accidents and lost-time incidents, developing and implementing corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
  • Manage the entry and tracking of workers' compensation claims and record incidents in the District's RMIS system.
  • Support the District's Return-to-Work Program and collaborate with the Risk Management Section.
  • Develop and oversee training programs for safety practices and OSHA compliance.
  • Partner with the Risk Manager to develop emergency/disaster preparedness activities and serve as a core member of the District's Incident Management Team.
  • Prepare periodic reports to management and on specific topics as requested.
  • Maintain safety records in accordance with state and federal requirements.
  • Manage budgets to provide adequate equipment and resources for safety programs.
  • Assign, coordinate, and supervise work done by subordinates, including rewards, disciplines, and grievances.
Requirements
  • Graduation from a four-year accredited college or university with a major in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, safety technology, engineering, or science.
  • At least six years of experience in the development, implementation, and communication of safety programs in an industrial, construction, manufacturing, or process environment, including three years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Additional experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Certification as an Associate Safety Professional by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals may be substituted for the required education and/or experience to a maximum of two years.
  • Certification as a Certified Safety Professional by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals may be substituted for the required education and/or experience to a maximum of four years.
  • Promotional requirement: one year of experience with the District as a Senior Safety Specialist and civil service status as a Senior Safety Specialist.
