Your Role:

The obstetrical technologist plays a vital role within the obstetrical healthcare team, providing essential surgical technical support to both the surgeon and registered nurse in the operating room. This position involves preparing necessary supplies and equipment for surgical procedures and ensuring the appropriate instruments are readily available for the surgeon. The surgical technologist must stay informed about current trends in the operating room, including new products, procedures, and techniques utilized by physicians.

Your Contributions to the Team:

  • Collaborates independently or with other staff to ensure all required supplies, instruments, and equipment are prepared for assigned procedures, utilizing preference cards effectively.
  • Exhibits strong oral and written communication skills, maintains patient confidentiality, and interacts with all customers in a professional manner. Accepts constructive feedback positively.
  • Complies with all hospital and departmental safety protocols, including Universal Protocol, biohazard waste management, and surgical specimen management. Maintains a clean and organized work environment.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in all procedures relevant to the scope of practice, including the use of routine and specialty instruments, room preparations, and sterilization methods.
  • Shows adaptability and flexibility in assigned duties, prioritizing tasks effectively and assisting colleagues with minimal supervision.
  • Possesses a solid understanding of aseptic techniques as per AORN standards.
  • Assists in the preparation of instruments and equipment for decontamination or sterilization as required.
  • Ensures the integrity of sterile packaging and verifies sterilization exposure. Opens supplies using aseptic techniques.
  • Establishes and maintains a sterile field for all surgical procedures.
  • Adheres to all surgical count policies and medication administration protocols.

Qualifications:

Essential Expertise and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program is required.
  • Experience as a surgical tech in obstetrics is preferred.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:

  • Certification in Surgical Technology is required if more than one year has passed since graduation.
  • New graduates must obtain certification within one year of hire.
