Litigation Support Paralegal

The Innocence Project is dedicated to exonerating the wrongfully convicted, preventing future injustices, and fostering equitable justice systems for all individuals. Our mission is informed by scientific evidence and a commitment to anti-racism. Since our founding, we have utilized DNA and other scientific innovations to demonstrate wrongful convictions, successfully freeing over 200 individuals who collectively endured more than 3,600 years of wrongful imprisonment. Our advocacy has also resulted in significant legislative changes at both state and federal levels. Currently, the Innocence Project continues to champion freedom, drive systemic reform, and promote the innocence movement.

The Litigation Support Paralegal is an integral member of the Post-Conviction Litigation team, providing essential research assistance, drafting, and administrative support to the Director of Special Litigation in alignment with the Innocence Project's fundamental objectives—liberating the innocent. This role encompasses general case management, records and data oversight, responsiveness to litigation-related inquiries, and aiding in the upkeep of departmental resources.

The Litigation Support Paralegal engages in tasks that require innovative thinking and sound judgment, collaborates with attorneys, and may interact with various departments within the Innocence Project. This position reports directly to the Director of Special Litigation and may oversee interns and volunteers, while working cooperatively with all staff in the Post-Conviction Litigation Department and law clinic students.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain electronic case files

  • Assist in evidence retrieval and discovery processes
  • Analyze case details and enhance understanding of DNA testing
  • Draft memos and other materials to support legal proceedings
  • Prepare legal documents for court submission
  • Conduct legal research and collaborate with subject matter experts
  • Compile parole applications and clemency correspondence

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor's degree or Paralegal Certification
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Adobe Acrobat
  • Strong writing and analytical skills
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States
