Job Title: Mental Health Advocate

At Oswego County Opportunities, Inc., we are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Mental Health Advocate to join our team. As a key member of our staff, you will play a vital role in providing support and services to individuals with severe mental illness.

Job Summary:

The Mental Health Advocate will assist with para-professional administrative and casework activities, as well as Medicaid billing for the Mental Health Transitional Living Apartment Treatment Program. This role requires providing service coordination and crisis supports to high-risk individuals in need of rehabilitative services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with day-to-day activities, operation, and upkeep of the MHTL Apartment Treatment Program.
  • Provide guidance and advisement to consumers in their daily activities, ensuring a safe and home-like atmosphere.
  • Evaluate and document consumers' mental, behavioral, and emotional health during each visit.
  • Ensure adequate food supply and provide education and assistance in daily housekeeping activities.
  • Provide emergency supportive and trauma-informed crisis counseling to consumers in distress.
  • Complete required documentation, paperwork, and Resident Records in a timely manner.
  • Develop and implement individual Quarterly Individualized Action Plans, incorporating activities of daily living and providing assistance in related personal progress.
  • Provide guidance and advisement in core Medicaid Reimbursable Services, teaching and monitoring daily living skills, and facilitating education groups as scheduled.
  • Support consumers in attaining their goals by providing advocacy, linkages, and education to necessary community services and resources.
  • Advocate for consumer needs with treatment providers and community resources when the consumer is unable to do so themselves.
  • Maintain a good working relationship with treatment providers, healthcare providers, social service agencies, and the criminal justice system.
  • Ensure prompt and accurate data input into Precision Care and Initial Contact/Intake and daily service data into agency database, CAPTAIN.
  • Oversee consumer medication administration and weekly med bar fills, completing controlled med counts, and documentation.
  • Provide satisfactory exchange of information at shift change.
  • Assist in household upkeep and maintenance, conducting double-staffed room searches as directed by supervisory staff.
  • Follow petty cash procedures and assist with client finances, including PNA and collection of room and board.
  • Attend staff meetings and attend required training for skill enhancement.
  • Teach and assist with fire safety skills, plan and initiate constructive leisure time activities, and instill positive socialization and coping skills through role modeling.
  • Provide first aid in emergency situations and complete NYS OMH/Justice Center and agency Incident Reports as needed.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures as outlined in the Program Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Share 24-hour on-call coverage according to schedule.

Requirements:

  • Must have knowledge of and the ability to relate to the mentally ill population, implement principles of normalization, philosophies, and techniques of programming.
  • Must be willing to actively participate in activities with clients.
  • Must use good judgment in dealing with all situations and circumstances that arise.
  • Must exhibit professionalism and flexibility.
  • Must be creative in program planning, demonstrate resourcefulness, initiative, and objectivity.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision and handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Must also be able to work within a team to ensure consumers receive the best quality of life possible.
  • Must possess good communication skills and be able to follow complex oral and written directions.
  • Must have the ability to relate to consumers in a warm and non-judgmental manner and be a good role model to consumers and staff.
  • Must possess a valid New York State Driver's License with a good driving record and have access to a reliable vehicle for travel and transporting clients.
  • Must have acceptable physical and mental health to carry out the responsibilities of the position, including the ability to climb stairs and lift at least 25 lbs. regularly.
  • Must attend required training and staff meetings as requested.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a Human Services-related field or;
  • Associate's degree in behavioral sciences/Human Services and 3 year's experience in a mental health-related setting; or
  • High School Diploma or equivalent and 5 year's experience in a mental health-related setting.
