Phlebotomy Specialist

As a Phlebotomist at Kaiser Permanente, you will play a vital role in supporting the laboratory function of providing diagnostic information for patient care. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure the proper collection and processing of laboratory specimens, while also performing special procedures and mentoring new employees. You will work closely with clinicians, nursing staff, and other department members to meet operational service needs.
Key Responsibilities- Perform order entry, specimen collection, and processing according to established Work Instructions (WI), clarifying clinician orders and obtaining pertinent patient information.
- Accurately identify patients, determine specimen requirements, and collect patient samples using appropriate venipuncture or capillary collection methods.
- Assure completeness and accuracy of specimen labeling and enter patient or specimen information into the laboratory computer system.
- Provide excellent customer service to all members, prioritizing workload according to urgency of request and coordinating activities with the Phlebotomy and Laboratory Service/Technical Assistant workgroups.
- Act as a resource for medical or laboratory staff, facilitating communication and problem-solving between Phlebotomists and Laboratory Service/Technical Assistants.
- Provide instructions to physicians, nursing staff, and patients on proper specimen collection, answering related questions accurately.
- Evaluate, process, and coordinate specimens for testing and/or shipping, following applicable WI and consulting computer information for special handling instructions.
- Complete appropriate forms as applicable and use the laboratory computer system to obtain patient demographics, perform order entry, and generate barcode labels.
- Completion of an Accredited Phlebotomy Program or minimum 18 months of phlebotomy experience within the previous 5 years in a multi-patient clinical laboratory.
- High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
- Demonstrated customer-focused service skills, understanding of basic phlebotomy principles and techniques, and ability to handle multiple tasks in a limited time frame.
- Able to produce high-quality work, problem-solve, exercise good judgment, and adapt to changing situations.
