Rutgers University Labor Relations Specialist Job Description

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a skilled Labor Relations Specialist to join the Office of University Labor Relations. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Academic Labor Relations, this position plays a crucial role in negotiating, interpreting, and administering collective negotiations agreements for Rutgers University.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Participate in collective negotiations, design and deliver workshops on employee and labor relations subjects, and develop and administer University employee and labor relations policies and procedures.
  • Resolve complex employee-supervisor-union-related employee relations and labor relations issues.
  • Advise supervisors and employees on labor and employee relations matters.
  • Conduct research on existing, new, and anticipated legislation as requested.
  • Provide guidance on grievance procedures.
  • Collaborate with University Human Resources to recommend new and existing human resources policies.
  • Work closely with the Office of Senior Vice President and General Counsel on grievance and disciplinary arbitrations, PERC proceedings, and contract interpretation issues.
  • Demonstrate commitment to valuing diversity, equity, and inclusion, and contribute to an inclusive learning and working environment.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, such as labor relations, human resources, or business administration, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five years of progressive relevant experience in labor relations or human resources in a unionized environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced relevant degree or law degree.
  • Prior experience in higher education and/or the public sector.
  • Experience in employee or labor relations in an academic medical center or healthcare facility.
  • Experience costing proposals and wages in labor negotiations.
