Job Overview

Position Summary:

The individual in this role is tasked with the on-site execution of the Radiation Safety Program. This includes ensuring adherence to organizational, local, state, and federal radiation safety standards and regulations. The technician will oversee radiological work controls and activities involving radioactive substances, while also interpreting and validating field data acquired from radiation surveys utilizing appropriate instruments and analyses.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage routine incoming and outgoing radioactive shipments, monitoring for contamination and radiation dose levels.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret sample results to ensure compliance with relevant radiation safety regulations and environmental standards.
  • Conduct area surveys to detect elevated exposure or contamination levels, responding effectively to any incidents involving radionuclides.
  • Issue radiation work permits and provide briefings to personnel regarding radiological conditions and operational requirements.
  • Control access to radiologically controlled areas for personnel and materials.
  • Operate and manage radiological detection and counting equipment, as well as air sampling devices.
  • Ensure the proper functioning and maintenance of radiological control equipment.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness drills and respond to emergencies as needed.
  • Maintain accurate field radiation protection records, including survey logs and radiation work permit documentation.
  • May lead and train other Health Physics personnel, ensuring their safety performance.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Associate's degree in Nuclear Technology or a related field preferred.
  • National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT) certification is preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in a collaborative environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of local, state, and federal radiation safety compliance regulations.
  • Expertise in interpreting radiation safety compliance regulations.
  • Proficient understanding of radiation safety principles and practices.
  • Skilled in utilizing radiation monitoring instruments and methodologies.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications and database management.
  • Ability to effectively schedule tasks for other Health Physics technicians.
  • Proven capability to identify exposure levels, recognize trends, and develop radiation control measures.
  • Ability to manage complex tasks across multiple subject areas.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

This position primarily involves working in an industrial environment, which may include exposure to varying temperatures and weather conditions. Fieldwork may entail exposure to radiation, noise, dust, and chemicals.

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds; handle, grip, and reach above or below shoulder height.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, bend, crouch, and maintain balance.
  • Capability to climb ladders and scaffolding to perform work at heights.
  • Effective communication skills, including speaking, reading, and writing in clear English.
  • Basic math and computer skills are essential.
  • Ability to work in various environments, including indoors and outdoors, under extreme conditions.
  • Ability to operate equipment safely and work with hazardous machinery.
  • Ability to wear protective gear, including goggles, hard hats, gloves, and chemical-resistant clothing.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others.
  • Must be able to wear a respirator and work in environments with ionizing radiation (passing a respiratory physical/fit test is required).
