Position: Health Physics Technician
Role Summary:
The Health Physics Technician plays a critical role in the execution of the Radiation Safety Program, ensuring adherence to all relevant company, local, state, and federal regulations regarding radiation safety. This position involves the oversight of radiological work controls and activities that involve radioactive materials. The technician is responsible for interpreting and validating field data collected from radiation surveys utilizing appropriate instruments and analytical methods.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage the processing of routine incoming and outgoing radioactive shipments while monitoring for contamination and dose levels.
- Collect, analyze, and interpret various samples to ensure compliance with applicable radiation safety regulations and environmental standards.
- Conduct thorough area surveys to detect elevated exposure levels or contamination, and respond effectively to any incidents involving radionuclides.
- Issue radiation work permits and provide briefings to personnel regarding radiological conditions and operational requirements.
- Control access to radiologically controlled areas for personnel and materials.
- Operate and manage radiological counting and detection equipment, as well as air sampling devices.
- Ensure the proper functioning and maintenance of radiological control equipment.
- Participate in emergency preparedness drills and respond to emergencies as needed.
- Maintain accurate records of field radiation protection activities, including survey logs and radiation work permit documentation.
- May provide leadership, training, and direction to other Health Physics staff.
- Oversee the safety performance of fellow Health Physics technicians.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or GED required.
- Associate's degree in Nuclear Technology or a related field preferred.
- National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT) certification is a plus.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, particularly in a collaborative environment.
- In-depth knowledge of local, state, and federal radiation safety compliance regulations.
- Expertise in interpreting radiation safety compliance regulations.
- Comprehensive understanding of radiation safety principles and practices.
- Proficient in the use of radiation monitoring instruments and methodologies.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and database applications.
- Ability to effectively schedule and manage tasks for other Health Physics technicians.
- Proven capability to identify exposure levels, recognize trends, and develop effective radiation control measures.
- Ability to handle complex tasks across multiple areas of focus.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
This position primarily operates in an industrial environment where exposure to varying temperatures and weather conditions is expected. Fieldwork may involve potential exposure to radiation, noise, dust, and chemicals.
- Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks such as climbing, bending, and balancing.
- Effective communication skills in English, including speaking, reading, and writing.
- Basic math and computer skills are necessary.
- Ability to work in diverse environments, including office settings and outdoor conditions.
- Must be capable of operating equipment and wearing protective gear, including respirators.
