Position Overview:

The Chief Operations Executive (COE) plays a pivotal role in advancing the strategic objectives of the University of Chicago. Reporting directly to the President, the COE is a vital member of the executive leadership team, tasked with enhancing the institution's educational, research, and community engagement missions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the operational frameworks that support the University’s infrastructure, including facilities, technology, and human resources.
  • Collaborate with senior leaders, including the Chief Financial Officer and Provost, to align operational initiatives with the University’s mission.
  • Manage a diverse portfolio of strategic projects aimed at improving service delivery across various departments.
  • Ensure the effective stewardship of the University’s resources, promoting efficiency and sustainability.
  • Lead a team of senior administrators, including the Associate Vice Presidents for Facilities Services, Human Resources, and Information Technology.

Built Environment:

The University of Chicago boasts a sprawling campus with a diverse array of facilities. The COE will oversee capital planning, campus architecture, and the quality of the built environment, ensuring that it meets the needs of the academic community.

Information Technology Services:

The COE will manage the central Information Technology Services organization, focusing on innovation, security, and reliability in IT systems that support the University’s academic and administrative functions.

Human Resources:

Providing executive oversight for the central human resources organization, the COE will ensure effective recruitment, development, and retention of talent across the University.

Essential Competencies:

  • Ability to inspire confidence and serve as a trusted advisor to the University’s leadership.
  • Strong project management skills with a focus on achieving deadlines and financial targets.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of producing high-level executive materials.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse community.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in a leadership role within a complex organization.
  • Proven track record in strategic advisory roles and managing substantial budgets.
  • Experience in overseeing operations in areas such as facilities, human resources, or information technology.
