Job DescriptionWe are hiring at Starling Physicians, a VillageMD company, for a Phlebotomy Specialist position.
Essential Job Functions:
- Collect blood samples from patients using appropriate aseptic technique.
- Process stat specimens according to Starling Physicians' SOP.
- Prepare collection containers with appropriate preservatives for patients and provide instructions for proper collection of specimens at home.
- Properly measure and record a volume for a 24-hr collection.
- Collect COC Urine Drug Screens and H. pylori Breath tests.
- Handle orders on minors and complete paperwork and labeling of specimens for OVH Blood Bank.
- Process satellite specimens and deliver them to the appropriate department.
- Monitor inventory levels and follow protocol for replenishing supplies in the phlebotomy room and storage area.
- Delete/cancel orders as necessary with full documentation of reason.
- Recall patients for follow-up procedures or error correction as required.
- Document callbacks in the lab logbook.
- Utilize LIS for all applicable functions to perform job duties, including downtime procedures.
- Adapt work schedule to meet emergency staffing needs.
Required Competencies:
• Demonstrates competency in adult, pediatric, and infant phlebotomy.
• Demonstrates competency in performing skin punctures and bleeding times.
• Demonstrates application of an adequate bandage to puncture site with explanation of puncture site care to patient.
General Job Functions:
- Check-in patients in satellite labs, including arriving patients on the day-list.
- Process lab and office collected specimens for transport to the main lab by courier.
- Contact a courier for a stat pickup in a satellite office.
- Perform, log, and enter results for Rapid Strep and Hemoccult tests in the LIS.
- Notify physicians of critical results.
- Train new staff in proper lab policies and procedures.
Education, Certification, Computer, and Training Requirements:
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum of 2 years of phlebotomy experience required and drug screen collection preferred.
• Phlebotomy Technician Certification through the National Health Career Association (NHA) preferred.
• Knowledge of medical terminology, HIPAA guidelines, and laboratory requirements.
• Ability to communicate effectively and read/follow procedures accurately.

Travel to satellite locations as needed.
