Public Works Technician

Our Public Works team is seeking a motivated and experienced Heavy Equipment Operator to join their ranks. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for maintaining and improving the City's infrastructure by operating a variety of heavy equipment.

Responsibilities:
- Operate and maintain heavy equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, and asphalt pavers.
- Pour and finish concrete for various construction projects.
- Sweep streets, vacuum catch basins, and clean storm drain pipes.
- Perform grading for site preparation and haul and stockpile various materials.
- Assist in pouring concrete for stormwater structures.
- Perform rough carpentry work, including setting forms and installing rebar/wire mesh.
- Construct and perform maintenance and repairs on ditches, swales, and other open drainage channels.
- Mow rights-of-way, trim sight distance problems, low-hanging limbs over sidewalks and streets, trim around guardrails, edges sidewalks and curbs.
- Assist in cultivating, planting, watering, mulching, and spraying flowers, plants, shrubs, trees, and turf areas.
- Operate light automotive and mechanical equipment in connection with the above tasks.
- As a trainee, operate heavy equipment under supervision.
- Work around heavy construction equipment and all types of traffic.
- Repair tools and equipment of a less complex nature and perform general maintenance on all small equipment.
- Use small hand tools, including shovels, rakes, lutes, rakes, picks, pruning tools, floats, tools for edging, jointing, and stamping concrete, etc.
- Operate edger, string trimmer, chain saw, blowers, etc.
- Perform rough carpentry work.
- Raise utility structures for resurfacing, utility cuts, patching, and asphalt maintenance.
- Lay brick and block.
- When not operating equipment, perform semi-skilled work on the job-site as a laborer, using small hand tools.
- Perform various landscaping tasks.
- Perform daily pre-trip inspections on assigned vehicles and equipment (90%).
- Snow and ice storm removal and other storm debris removal (10%).
Requirements:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience: Minimal experience in operating motorized equipment required.
- Licenses/Certifications: Valid NC Class A Commercial driver's license with Restriction 8 and Tanker endorsement within three months of hire. Basic Work Zone Safety and Flagger certifications within 12 months of hire.
- Physical Demands: Physical demands include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, repetitive motions, and working in extreme temperatures, noise, vibration, and hazardous conditions.
- Special Requirements: Possession of a valid appropriate Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class 'A' with Restriction 8 and an acceptable driving history. Work Zone Safety and Flagger Certifications. Drug screening and criminal background check required.
Salary: $42,232.74 - $59,505.02 Annually
