Head Start, Inc. is looking for a dedicated and caring Nutritional Support Specialist to help deliver healthy meals and snacks to our young learners. The successful candidate will possess a genuine enthusiasm for working with children and a solid understanding of nutritional requirements and healthy eating habits. This is a part-time role, offering 20 hours per week, with flexible midday hours ideal for those needing adaptable schedules.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the preparation and serving of meals and snacks in accordance with established menus, ensuring the appropriate quantity based on attendance and food service requests.
  • Utilize standardized recipes and maintain food safety practices to ensure timely meal readiness.
  • Collaborate with the Nutrition Coordinator for any major menu adjustments and accurately document menu changes.
  • Adhere to Safe Food Handling Guidelines and maintain cleanliness in the kitchen as per local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Wash and sanitize kitchen utensils and equipment following established sanitation protocols.
  • Monitor and record freezer and refrigerator temperatures daily.
  • Implement security measures for kitchen and storage areas, ensuring that all chemicals are safely stored away from children's reach.
  • Maintain comprehensive records including inventory, recipes, production logs, and meal counts.
  • Engage in ongoing assessments of menu satisfaction, food waste, and dining atmosphere, participating in classroom nutrition education when possible.

Active Supervision for Child Safety:

At Head Start, Inc., we prioritize the safety of children through Active Supervision. All staff members are responsible for ensuring that children are never left unattended. Any incidents of unsupervised children must be reported immediately.

Active Supervision involves maintaining focused attention and intentional observation of children in all settings, including classrooms, playgrounds, and during transportation. Staff should position themselves strategically to monitor children effectively, using their understanding of child development to anticipate needs and intervene when necessary.

Qualifications:

A High School Diploma or GED/equivalent is required, along with at least six months of experience in a large-scale food service environment preferred.

Physical Requirements:

This role requires the ability to perform essential functions that may include standing for extended periods, lifting up to 50 pounds regularly, and occasionally up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities needed include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

The position is situated in a busy kitchen environment, exposing the employee to various kitchen chemicals, heat, and equipment. The noise level can range from moderate to loud.
