Job Overview:

This position is responsible for the operation of specialized construction machinery, including both track and rubber-tired equipment, for various maintenance and construction projects. The role demands a high level of skill and precision, ensuring that all tasks are completed to strict specifications and tolerances.

Key Responsibilities:

The following duties are typical for this role. The absence of specific duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar or related. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.

  • Operate heavy machinery to perform tasks such as digging, grading, and transporting materials for construction and maintenance of infrastructure.
  • Skillfully maneuver equipment in various environments, ensuring adherence to safety regulations and traffic laws.
  • Utilize excavators and backhoes for precise digging and trenching, ensuring minimal disruption to existing utilities.
  • Manage loaders to efficiently move materials, maintaining control over the weight and volume to prevent equipment overload.
  • Operate motor graders and scrapers to establish gradients for construction projects, ensuring compliance with project specifications.
  • Drive heavy vehicles to transport materials and equipment, ensuring secure loading and unloading procedures.
  • Conduct routine inspections and maintenance on equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Utilize safety gear and monitor the work environment to protect oneself and others from hazards.
  • Complete necessary documentation related to work orders, maintenance, and project status.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members to coordinate work activities and resolve issues.

Minimum Qualifications:

A high school diploma or GED is preferred, along with three years of experience operating heavy construction machinery, including two years of off-road equipment operation. Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the necessary knowledge and skills will also be considered.

Required Certifications:

A valid Georgia driver's license is required. Depending on the specific assignment, a Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License may be necessary.

Preferred Experience:

Experience operating various types of heavy equipment, including but not limited to dozers, excavators, and landfill compactors, is highly desirable. Specific qualifications may vary based on departmental needs.
