Purpose of Classification:

This classification aims to operate specialized construction machinery, including track and rubber-tired equipment, for maintenance, construction, and operational tasks that require a high level of skill, precision, and dexterity.

Key Responsibilities:

The following duties are typical for this role. The omission of specific tasks does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Additional duties may be required and assigned.

- Operates heavy machinery to perform tasks such as digging, moving materials, grading, and loading, contributing to the construction and maintenance of public infrastructure, including roads and utilities. Equipment is primarily operated on-site, with some travel over public roads, while ensuring compliance with traffic laws and safety protocols.

- Utilizes excavators, backhoes, and similar equipment for skilled digging and trenching necessary for public utility projects, ensuring adherence to precise specifications to minimize property damage and avoid interference with utility lines.

- Operates loaders with significant capacity to transport materials, controlling the equipment's height and angle for optimal payload delivery while ensuring weight limits are not exceeded.

- Maneuvers motor graders and scrapers to establish gradients for large-scale construction and maintenance projects, adjusting equipment settings to achieve desired outcomes related to slope and surface smoothness.

- Drives large trucks to transport materials and equipment, ensuring safe loading and unloading practices while securing loads to prevent spillage.

- Conducts pre-operation inspections and light maintenance on equipment, including oil changes and refueling, while ensuring cleanliness and security of vehicles after use.

- Transports and manages various materials and equipment for projects, utilizing safety gear and monitoring the work environment to ensure the safety of all personnel and the public.

- Completes necessary documentation, including work orders and maintenance reports, while effectively communicating with supervisors and team members to coordinate work activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

A high school diploma or GED is preferred; three years of experience operating heavy construction equipment, with at least two years in off-road equipment or a related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.

Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license. A Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License may be required based on assignment.

Preferred Qualifications by Department:

The following experience is preferred for Sanitation Tractor Trailer Operator vacancies:

Two years' experience operating tractor-trailer trucks or one year as a Sanitation Tractor Trailer Operator Trainee. Must possess a valid Georgia Commercial Class A Driver's License.

The following experience is preferred for Sanitation Landfill Equipment Operator vacancies:

Three years' experience operating heavy equipment such as dozers, excavators, and landfill compactors. A valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License is not required; a minimum Class C is acceptable.

The following experience is preferred for Roads & Drainage vacancies:

Experience operating a Low Boy is required.

The following experience is preferred for Watershed Management vacancies:

Proficiency in operating mini excavators, large excavators, track loaders, front-end loaders, and backhoes is essential. A valid Georgia Commercial Class A Driver's License is required.

The following experience is preferred for Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Affairs vacancies:

A valid Georgia Commercial Class A Driver's License is required. Experience in trailering and hauling backhoes, mini excavators, and bobcats is necessary. Must have operated a backhoe, mini excavator, and bobcat within the last three years.
