Job Overview

Position Summary:

The Fleet Maintenance Supervisor will oversee the organization, scheduling, and auditing of maintenance tasks, which include preventative, mechanical, and electrical repairs for the vehicle fleet. This role provides access to advanced technology, tools, and training opportunities. Additionally, the supervisor will participate in the recruitment and training of a team of mechanics to ensure customer satisfaction is met effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Terminal Manager to supervise maintenance personnel, including managing hiring processes and disciplinary actions, coordinating during absences, assessing performance, and delivering technical and safety training.
  • Review repair orders, assess completed work by mechanics, maintain records of repair orders, and communicate vehicle availability with Dispatch.
  • Assist in diagnosing and resolving mechanical issues. May provide training to mechanics and ensure adherence to proper mechanical procedures.
  • Organize services and maintenance for the facility as needed.
  • Manage fuel and parts procurement, maintain inventory levels, and oversee subcontracted repair work.
  • Ensure that fleet inspections and repairs comply with established policies and regulations at both state and federal levels.
  • Address all defects identified during inspections and ensure timely repairs are made before vehicle deployment.
  • Compile reports on maintenance activities and conduct quality control checks on completed repairs. Aid in tracking warranty and recall work.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance documentation and records.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs and operate all shop equipment while supervising maintenance staff.
  • Ensure a clean and safe working environment.
  • Manage repairs and maintenance operations efficiently and cost-effectively.
  • Coordinate work schedules with operational needs and assist in developing quality control initiatives.
  • Conduct research on maintenance practices and prepare necessary reports and memorandums. Assist in evaluating vehicle replacement needs.
  • Oversee the engagement of external vendors and assess their performance. Provide technical support in service contract preparation and management.
  • Audit and control parts, tools, and fuel inventories, ensuring accuracy in inventory management.
  • Support the Fleet Maintenance Management team in drafting and implementing policies and procedures. Offer recommendations on equipment specifications and annual vehicle replacements.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations daily.
  • Be available for after-hours and emergency situations as required.
  • Occasionally serve as a substitute driver for various routes or activities.
  • Work alongside technicians to maintain and repair fleet vehicles, including performing routine maintenance and guiding technicians in diagnosing vehicle issues using manufacturer software.
  • Perform additional duties as necessary.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Proficient knowledge of tools, procedures, technical skills, and safety regulations related to the maintenance and repair of gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel vehicles.
  • Ability to operate a computer and learn software applications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with excellent customer service abilities. Capable of problem-solving and finding effective solutions.
  • Familiarity with federal and state regulations, including EPA and OSHA standards.
  • Operational understanding of motorized vehicles and shop equipment.
  • Ability to prioritize and schedule work effectively.
  • Inspect equipment and diagnose mechanical issues.
  • Experience with propane/gasoline medium-duty truck engines is preferred.
  • ASE Certification(s) is a plus.
  • Capability to lift heavy equipment, including brake drums and tires, as needed.
  • Experience operating various shop tools and equipment.
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to pass required background checks.
  • Capacity to perform essential job functions.
  • Compliance with all company policies and procedures.
  • This position is safety-sensitive and regulated by the DOT.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, supplemented by specialized training in vehicle and equipment repair.
  • Two to three years of experience as a Technician in the school bus, trucking, or heavy equipment sectors, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License with CDL, passenger, and school bus endorsements, or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Ability to regularly lift heavy equipment over 50 lbs, occasionally up to 100 lbs.
  • Provide personal hand tools necessary for regular maintenance tasks.
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License and DOT physical, or the ability to obtain within three months of hire.
  • Ability to safely lift heavy equipment frequently throughout the workday.
  • Maintain a complete set of tools on-site for fleet vehicle maintenance.
  • Possess or agree to acquire a Pennsylvania light and heavy-duty truck inspection license within six months of hiring.

Work Environment:

This position is full-time and requires in-person attendance. The work schedule typically includes day shifts with a minimum of 8 hours per day, Monday through Friday, with potential weekend work as needed.
