Traffic Control Systems Engineer

GENERAL SUMMARY
The Traffic Control Systems Engineer is responsible for the operation and upkeep of the County's advanced traffic signal systems and associated databases.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide specialized knowledge regarding the design, execution, operation, and maintenance of the County's Advanced Traffic Control System (ATCS).
• Oversee and coordinate traffic signal timing initiatives, including special timing and emergency strategies for evacuations.
• Evaluate existing arterial coordination timing plans for effectiveness.
• Support the Traffic Signal Operations team in diagnosing signal issues, malfunctions, and programming of signal timing inputs, as well as managing the ATCS database.
• Compile technical documentation for annual reports to the relevant authorities and for external parties regarding signal timing inquiries and other technical matters related to the ATCS.
• Maintain the traffic system database, including intersection maps, schematics, and charts that represent the comprehensive network of communications.
• Collaborate with Signal Operations and IT Department on fiber optic communications and controller equipment testing and troubleshooting during failures.
• Address inquiries from citizens and public officials in a timely manner.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: A Bachelor's degree in Traffic or Civil Engineering, or a closely related discipline, supplemented by three (3) years of experience in the design, operation, or maintenance of signal systems; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities. Experience with communication systems, networks, database management, and fiber optic networks is preferred. Familiarity with Windows administration and networking is also preferred.
Licenses and Certifications: A valid driver’s license is required. The ability to obtain certification as a Professional Engineer in Florida within six (6) months of employment is also required.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Physical Requirements: Ability to operate office equipment, including computers and related peripherals. Must be capable of exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Must be able to work for extended periods outdoors and remain stationary in a seated position for prolonged durations. Physical demands are primarily those of sedentary work.
Language Skills: Must possess the ability to communicate effectively in English, including conveying, recording, and exchanging information; explaining procedures; and giving, receiving, and following oral and written instructions. Ability to read a variety of moderately complex technical data, policy manuals, and professional journals is required. Must be able to prepare forms and reports using prescribed formats while adhering to grammar, spelling, and punctuation rules.
Analytical Skills: Requires the ability to apply logical and scientific principles to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; interpret various technical instructions; and make independent judgments. Knowledge of planning principles and techniques is essential.
Numerical Skills: Must be capable of performing basic mathematical operations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as interpreting graphs and performing engineering calculations.
Interpersonal Skills: Requires the ability to interact with individuals beyond receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when faced with frequent deadlines and maintain consistent tact and courtesy in interactions with various professionals and the public.
