About the Role

The VETERANS HEALTH ADMINISTRATION is seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Peer Support Specialist to join our team. As a Peer Support Specialist, you will play a vital role in providing support and guidance to Veterans who are recovering from mental health conditions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in the service, training, consultation, and other professional activities of VA health care services
  • Use personal recovery experiences to model coping techniques and recovery tools to coach Veterans
  • Observe behaviors that may indicate difficulty adapting or responding to treatment and report concerns to the treatment team
  • Use ongoing individual and group meetings to teach Veterans how to identify and combat negative self-talk and overcome fears
  • Handle crisis interventions for Veterans and address other emergent situations
  • Inform Veterans about VA and community supports and resources
  • Maintain a working knowledge of current trends and developments in holistic approaches in wellness and recovery
Requirements
  • Must be a Veteran who has recovered or is recovering from a mental health condition
  • Must have at least 1 year of recovery from a mental health condition
  • Must have a full, current, and unrestricted peer specialist certification
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must have a valid driver's license
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with Veterans who have mental health conditions
  • Experience providing support and guidance to individuals who are recovering from mental health conditions
  • Knowledge of current trends and developments in holistic approaches in wellness and recovery
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
