Overview
The Infusion Registered Nurse (RN) is a qualified healthcare professional dedicated to delivering evidence-based care to adult patients undergoing various cancer treatments, including chemotherapy and immunotherapy. This role requires collaboration with a multidisciplinary healthcare team to ensure patient-centered care, leveraging expertise in infusion therapy, oncology nursing standards, safe handling of hazardous medications, and effective side effect management.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments to identify changes in patient conditions, recognizing signs and symptoms of adverse reactions.
- Effectively communicate essential information regarding treatment plans and potential side effects, ensuring medication reconciliation during each patient interaction.
- Provide informed recommendations based on oncology best practices, adhering to established policies and collaborating with the healthcare team.
- Obtain physician orders, deliver nursing care, document assessments, and educate patients about infusion treatments and associated side effects.
- Analyze and interpret abnormal laboratory results and diagnostic tests, communicating findings to the appropriate healthcare provider.
- Verify treatment parameters before initiation, performing necessary calculations in accordance with established protocols.
- Administer chemotherapy via various routes (IV, SQ, IM, IP, Central line, Peripheral, and PO) following Oncology Nursing Society guidelines and monitor patients for adverse reactions.
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team, including clinical trials, to ensure compliance with treatment protocols and maintain accurate documentation.
- Address patient concerns and coordinate follow-up treatments as necessary.
- Provide tailored education and resources to patients and families regarding treatment and side effects, adjusting teaching methods to meet individual needs.
- Engage in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to patient safety and experience efforts, participating in governance and accreditation preparations.
- Commit to ongoing professional development by maintaining oncology certification, attending relevant conferences, and participating in community initiatives.
- Complete annual competencies and assigned learning modules.
- Perform additional duties as required to support the facility and patient care within the scope of practice.
- Participate in cross-training opportunities within related oncology units.
- Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and standards of conduct.
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA regulations to ensure patient confidentiality.
Qualifications
Education:
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) is required.
- Employees are expected to enroll in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program within two years of hire.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred.
Experience:
- Preferred: Two years of experience in oncology patient care.
Licensure:
- Active Kentucky Registered Nurse License or a compact license with privileges to practice in Kentucky.
Certification:
- Current ONS Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy certification is required.
- ONCC certification (OCN, BMTCN, and/or CBCN) is preferred.
- Certification must be obtained within two years of employment.
