Job Objective


To manage the operation of downstream production machinery with a focus on safety and efficiency; maintain necessary documentation and effectively communicate ideas and issues to relevant personnel; execute scheduled preventative maintenance and equipment changeovers; accountable for delivering top-quality products.

Key Responsibilities and Duties


Ensure the safe and efficient functioning of all downstream machinery to meet or surpass company-defined Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and customer quality standards.

  • Adhere to Lock out / Tag out procedures.
  • Utilize appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when in the production area.
  • Comply with all Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) upon entering the production zone.
  • Safely operate all fire extinguishers.
  • Actively address unsafe conditions on production equipment.
  • Immediately report all unsafe actions or conditions to the Shift Production Supervisor.
  • Participate in scheduled safety training provided by the company.
  • Respect all machine guards and safety alerts.
  • Responsible for producing and/or packaging the highest quality product consistently.
  • Ensure all production meets or exceeds customer expectations and standards.
  • Properly label and/or tag all production.
  • Place all non-conforming products on hold with the necessary documentation completed.
  • Collect data on quality measurements as directed or when necessary.
  • Ensure all quality checks are completed and recorded in the NWA Quality Monitor or a plant-specific form at scheduled intervals.
  • Accurately obtain and record all raw material lot numbers as required.
  • Communicate any out-of-specification conditions to the appropriate personnel.
  • Perform scheduled Preventative Maintenance tasks as outlined by the plant PM program.
  • Address machine inefficiencies proactively during preventative maintenance.
  • Ensure downstream equipment is clean and in 'showroom condition' post-maintenance.
  • Continuously assess equipment for improvement opportunities. Tag components needing repair, replacement, or enhancement as per Total Productive Manufacturing (TPM) guidelines.
  • Proactively manage housekeeping issues on the production floor and equipment.
  • Execute scheduled downstream production equipment changeovers as per the plant production schedule.
  • Conduct changeovers with minimal downtime following Single Minute Exchange of Dies (SMED) procedures.
  • Confirm production equipment operates safely and efficiently after each changeover.
  • Maintain adequate records to support the Computerized Maintenance Management Software (CMMS) system – MicroMain.
  • Document parts removed from inventory to maintain sufficient stock levels.
  • Notify the Maintenance Manager when parts inventory is low or reaches reorder levels.
  • Complete required paperwork and/or electronic data entry for all Micromain work orders.
  • Generate necessary quick tickets for emergency repairs.
  • Coordinate with the Production Manager regarding production equipment training and employee development.
  • Suggest training topics as needed.
  • Complete all machine and task-specific training within the designated timeframe.
  • Communicate issues, progress updates, and continuous improvement suggestions to management, maintenance, and production staff.
  • Promote and engage in good housekeeping practices to ensure plant appearance exceeds expectations.
  • Ensure all daily, weekly, and periodic cleaning tasks are performed as outlined in the Master Cleaning Schedule.
  • Execute line sanitization tasks as per the Master Sanitization Schedule and company procedures.
  • Maintain a clean workspace at all times.
  • Dispose of all garbage in the work area at the end of the assigned shift.
  • Clean the production floor in the work area.
  • Clean equipment if it becomes dirty during operations.
  • Organize and maintain clean workstations.
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate documentation throughout the shift.
  • Document any machine or process changes.
  • Complete necessary downstream operator checklists.
  • Maintain precise production reporting documentation.


Responsible for active participation in plant teams and activities including safety, quality, sustainability, community involvement, OEE, maintenance, employee wellness, brainstorming, and continuous improvement, which are essential for creating and sustaining a World Class environment.


Accountable for personal development by setting SMART goals, requesting regular meetings with managers, volunteering for plant improvement teams, seeking additional training, engaging in responsibilities beyond immediate job functions, pursuing higher education opportunities, and meeting or exceeding self-development and performance objectives.

Experience, Educational and Technical Qualifications


The ideal candidate for the Downstream Operator role should demonstrate a sense of urgency, accountability, ethical business practices, professionalism, self-motivation, and a commitment to improving the business.

A High School diploma or GED equivalent is preferred, along with successful completion of entrance examinations and interviews.
