Overview

The City of Valdosta is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Emergency Response Specialist within the Fire Services Department. This position entails a variety of critical responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  • Responding to urgent situations such as fire incidents, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, and rescue operations.
  • Executing firefighting tasks, which include combating and extinguishing fires, conducting rescues, and performing ventilation, salvage, and overhaul operations.
  • Providing essential first responder services during medical emergencies, including CPR and defibrillation.
  • Carrying out rescue missions that may involve vehicles, high/low angle scenarios, confined spaces, structural collapses, and trench rescues.
  • Engaging in regular training sessions on a daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis.
  • Performing maintenance on the station, equipment, and apparatus on a scheduled basis.

Physical Requirements

  • Candidates must be capable of lifting, pulling, or moving up to 50 lbs, climbing stairs and ladders, and maneuvering over distances of up to one mile. The role requires working in various environments, both indoors and outdoors, and may involve exposure to changing weather conditions, strong odors, loud noises, and repetitive tasks.

Other Qualifications

  • Minimum age of eighteen (18) years.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) equivalency is required.
  • A valid driver's license is necessary.
  • Candidates must reside within a specified distance from the designated fire station or city hall if assigned a take-home vehicle.
  • Successful completion of a background check, pre-employment physical, and drug screening is mandatory.
