Job Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled General Manager/Business Unit Manager to lead our laboratory operations. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for maintaining positive operating margins, meeting and exceeding annual budgets, and ensuring compliance with corporate and regulatory policies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage laboratory personnel, providing leadership and direction as needed.
  • Ensure adherence to highest quality and efficiency standards in laboratory operations.
  • Manage technical conduct, quality control, and related record keeping of all analytical evaluations performed.
  • Supervise, organize, and coordinate all technical activities of personnel within the principles of sound scientific endeavors, business economy, and professional development.
  • Provide planning, organization, direction, and control to meet company goals.
  • Ensure adherence to company health, safety, and environmental programs.
  • Establish and maintain professional business relationships with clients, industry officials, and peers.
  • Assist in generating marketing strategies, preparing comprehensive technical work proposals, and maintaining an influential position in establishing business expansion plans.
  • Provide input toward financial growth and development of the company.
  • Coordinate business activities with Business Unit Managers from other locations to ensure customer expectations are met without duplication of testing activities.
  • Oversee daily operations, including laboratory, quality, logistic, and managerial duties.
  • Represent the laboratory in technical meetings.
  • Participate with the Sales/Marketing team in preparing and quoting major technical studies.
  • Propose major investments to company executives.
  • Ensure laboratory expenses are on track with the annual budget.
  • Approve major expenses and control costs within established company guidelines.
  • Analyze monthly laboratory indicators, including operating and labor costs, turnaround time, productivity, etc.
  • Verify adherence to company employment policies and procedures.
  • Perform annual performance reviews for direct reporting personnel and coordinate reviews for other lab personnel.
  • Handle employee relation issues according to company guidelines and with Human Resources support.
  • Coordinate interaction between laboratory departments.
  • Understand and follow Quality System documents relevant to employment responsibilities, proposing changes and approving documents as required.
  • Conduct all activities in a safe and efficient manner.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 10 years of supervisory experience, with 10 years of professional experience in laboratory operations and 5 years of leadership experience with profit/loss accountability.
  • Familiarity with laboratory operations and services, EPA, DOT, OSHA, and DOL regulations.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills, strong customer relations skills, and ability to manage a business at a profit/loss responsibility level.
  • Ability to control operating budgets, develop and enforce policies, prioritize and delegate responsibilities, and successfully handle contract and other negotiations.
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
