Job Summary

The Medical Assistant plays a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and supporting the healthcare team at MedNorth Health Center. As a Certified Medical Assistant, you will be responsible for assisting healthcare providers with clinical duties, performing administrative tasks, and ensuring a positive patient experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Patient Care and Administrative Duties:
    • Initiate patient chart retrieval and outside medical records as needed.
    • Assist patients from the waiting area to the patient room and direct them throughout their visit.
    • Take patient vital signs and document them, performing point-of-care testing as required.
    • Provide patient care according to their age and diagnosis, adhering to standing orders and check-in procedures.
    • Contribute to the efficient operation of the clinical care team by anticipating patient, nursing staff, and provider needs.
    • Document clinical activities in a timely, legible, and comprehensive manner.
    • Implement nurse's instructions and provider's orders effectively and in a timely manner.
    • Coordinate referrals and track progress, reviewing encounter forms and directing patients to other team members as needed.
    • Address patient needs by completing forms accurately and thoroughly.
    • Perform or assist with documentation of lab results and collecting data.
    • Participate in population management with other care team members.
  • Quality Control and Safety:
    • Monitor the environment to ensure safety, reporting equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, and incidents promptly.
    • Follow safety policies and procedures, utilizing Personal Protective Equipment as needed.
    • Clean and prepare instruments, setting up supplies and equipment in patient rooms.
    • Label, package, and dispose of specimens according to lab protocol.
    • Use two patient identifiers prior to procedures and check-in.
    • Clean and disinfect examination rooms according to OSHA guidelines.
    • Perform point-of-care testing and quality control, documenting laboratory procedures accurately.
    • Restock exam rooms and check expiration dates on supplies.
    • Inspect equipment to ensure proper functioning.
  • Procedure Execution:
    • Ensure sterilization and instrument availability.
    • Prepare and set up supplies and equipment in examination or treatment rooms.
    • Assist in performing sterile procedures, treatments, and tests using skilled technique and following safety measures.
    • Perform injections according to policy and safe practices.
    • Perform phlebotomy according to policy and safe practices, processing specimens appropriately.
    • Place and read PPD skin tests and document them.
    • Perform eye and ear irrigation.
    • Perform EKGs and NSTs.
  • Patient Education:
    • Provide education materials to patients, explaining procedures, treatments, and medication usage as needed.
    • Document teaching and patient/family response in the patient medical record.
  • Customer Service:
    • Demonstrate concern for patient rights, privacy, and confidentiality.
    • Understand customer needs and respond quickly.
    • Treat patients with courtesy and respect, considering their impact on others.
    • Anticipate patient needs and assist them in a helpful manner.
    • Communicate with patients, families, visitors, and coworkers in a courteous and respectful manner.
  • Teamwork:
    • Work positively and cooperatively with other employees in and outside the departmental unit.
    • Share information and expertise with others to enable them to accomplish goals and objectives.
    • Seek opportunities to help rather than waiting to be asked.
    • Assist other team members in performing their assignments.
  • Professional Conduct:
    • Maintain a professional demeanor in all interactions with patients and staff.
    • Understand HIPAA and follow protocol for releasing information.
    • Function independently and complete assignments with minimal supervision.
    • Adapt to changes in the work environment.
    • Maintain an acceptable attendance record.
    • Observe the work schedule and adhere to all applicable Center and department rules, policies, and procedures.
    • Participate in ongoing education, in-services, staff development, and meetings.
  • Efficiency:
    • Complete work in an organized and timely manner.
    • Prioritize and plan work activities to achieve maximum efficiency.
    • Strive to improve center productivity.
    • Minimize non-productive time by filling slow periods with activities such as assisting others, professional development, and organization of work areas.

    • Identify problems in a timely manner and assist in developing alternative solutions.
    • Contribute to Continuous Quality Improvement activities.

  • Care Coordination Functions:
    • Engage with patients to identify and address barriers to health outcomes.
    • Implement and support Care Management interventions per the patient's care plan or assessed community needs.
    • Process referrals from the multidisciplinary team accurately and timely according to established workflows.
    • Schedule home visits and/or practice encounters with patients via phone or correspondence based on referrals.
    • Document all interactions with patients/others appropriately in the care management software.
    • Schedule/verify medical appointments for patients as needed.
    • Coordinate referrals to outside agencies as directed by the interdisciplinary team in a timely fashion.
    • Provide education to patients/families within the scope of practice.
    • Serve as a liaison among patients/families, community services, primary providers, specialists, and other care team members to coordinate services.
