Job Summary

This is a challenging opportunity to work as an Engineering Equipment Operator (Fire) with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. As a key member of the fire management team, you will be responsible for operating a variety of heavy equipment, including crawler tractors, dozers, and loader/backhoes, to support wildland fire suppression and prescribed burning operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate heavy equipment, such as crawler tractors and dozers, to support wildland fire suppression and prescribed burning operations.
  • Perform daily preventative maintenance and make repairs and adjustments to equipment and attachments.
  • Participate in fire management using prescribed fire and/or the control of wildfires on the refuge as a member of a team approach.
  • Operate a variety of gasoline or diesel-powered engineering and construction equipment with wheeled or crawler-type traction and attachments.
Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Must have prior experience in wildland firefighting.
  • Must meet the requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Handbook X118C, Job Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupation.
  • Must be able to interpret instructions, specifications, and operate safely.
Working Conditions

This position requires working in a fast-paced environment with frequent travel and exposure to extreme weather conditions. The selected candidate must be able to work independently and as part of a team, and must be physically fit to perform the duties of the position.
