Qualifications:
Educational Background:

A bachelor’s degree in laboratory science, biological science, chemistry, or equivalent education/work experience that meets the criteria for high complexity testing personnel as defined by CLIA 42 CFR. Certification from a nationally recognized certifying agency is mandatory.

Certain laboratory specialties may necessitate more rigorous certification standards.
Acceptable credentials may include:
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) via ASCP
  • Medical Technologist (MT) via AMT
  • Blood Bank (BB) via ASCP
  • Chemistry (C) via ASCP
  • Cytogenetics (CG) via ASCP
  • Cytotechnologist (CT) via ASCP
  • Hematology (H) via ASCP
  • Microbiology (M) via ASCP
  • Molecular Biology (MB) via ASCP
  • Specialist in Cytometry (SCYM) via ASCP
  • Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) via AACC or ASCP with a minimum of 5 years of contiguous laboratory experience.

Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree with certification; prior experience is not mandatory.
  • Associate's degree and/or education/work experience qualifications as per CLIA 42 CFT, along with MLT or other certification, and 5 years of contiguous laboratory experience are required.

Interpersonal Skills:
Demonstrates effective and respectful interaction with all individuals encountered in the medical center.

Reporting Structure:
Reports to the Laboratory Supervisor or designated representative.

Work Environment:
Capable of functioning in a fast-paced, often demanding, computerized setting. Must be able to lift 20 lbs and perform repetitive tasks. The role involves working in a laboratory with potential exposure to infectious and hazardous materials.

Testing Qualifications:
Employees in this classification are qualified to conduct moderate and high complexity testing, meeting the educational and laboratory experience standards set forth in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment of 1996.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Laboratory Testing: Conducts laboratory assessments utilizing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as specified by the laboratory area. Ensures proper labeling and processing of specimens. Executes all laboratory procedures efficiently and effectively with minimal supervision after training, adhering to Rush approved policies and procedures.
  • Quality Control and Maintenance: Implements necessary quality control (QC) procedures and preventative maintenance, including corrective actions and documentation for all processes and equipment. Identifies QC issues and communicates them to the appropriate supervisor or designee as per established protocols.
  • Troubleshooting: Engages in basic troubleshooting of equipment and processes with minimal assistance, documenting actions and notifying relevant personnel of any issues.
  • Work Area Organization: Maintains a clean, organized, and well-stocked work area. Disinfects the area at the start and end of each shift.
  • Specimen Acceptability: Rejects inappropriate specimens and informs the relevant personnel of any specimens that require re-drawing or collection.
  • Turnaround Time Management: Prioritizes and organizes workload to meet turnaround time expectations, regularly monitoring pending lists.
  • Time Management: Utilizes time effectively, seeking additional responsibilities when shift tasks are completed. Completes work within the designated time frame without incurring overtime.
  • Continuing Education: Required to obtain and document 12 hours of laboratory continuing education annually.
  • Special Projects: Accepts and/or volunteers for method evaluations and new procedure development, completing them within agreed timelines. Participates in the implementation of procedures and training of new staff and students.
  • Tech-in-Charge Duties: May assume the responsibilities of the tech-in-charge for designated periods, overseeing operations according to departmental guidelines.
  • Result Review: Reviews laboratory results as necessary, taking appropriate actions prior to verification and release, and recognizes critical results within defined time frames.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Other job duties will be defined by the specific competencies related to the laboratory's bench or assignment.
