The Healthcare Laboratory Scientist embodies the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adhering to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program while complying with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory standards.

A Laboratory Science Professional conducts testing procedures in a clinical laboratory and communicates results to the physician or designated personnel accurately and promptly for patient diagnosis and treatment.


Key Responsibilities:

Technical Duties:

Execute all pre-analytical processes pertinent to the specific laboratory section to ensure accurate order entry, appropriate specimen collection, and correct processing/transportation.

Confirm orders as necessary and verify non-patient information (e.g., collection time) according to established protocols.
Address unresolved orders and troubleshoot as needed.

Consult with physicians and/or nurses prior to laboratory information system (LIS) order entry to clarify unclear, duplicate, or ambiguous orders.

Ensure availability and acceptability of specimens for add-on tests and generate necessary orders.
Identify instances where compliance issues related to fraud and abuse require adjustments to test orders.
Collect, receive, and process specimens: Confirm specimens are correctly labeled upon receipt, evaluate for appropriateness, and take corrective action as necessary. Document unacceptable specimens and notify relevant parties.
Prioritize specimen processing based on established guidelines.
Aliquot specimens following defined protocols.

Perform all analytical testing relevant to the specific laboratory section, adhering to established written protocols and standard operating procedures (SOP).
Maintain Test System Integrity:

Conduct preventive maintenance on instruments and equipment according to a defined schedule.

Verify that reagents and supplies meet defined acceptability criteria upon receipt and prior to use; take action to remove unacceptable items from service.
Ensure availability of sufficient reagents and supplies necessary for testing. Notify senior staff when minimum inventory levels are reached.
Conduct and document all required quality control (QC) for test system performance.
Evaluate QC results and implement necessary corrective actions as per established protocols.

Specimen Preparation:
Perform any required pretest specimen preparation according to protocols (e.g., microbiology plating, cell cultures, filtering, extraction, separation, elution, absorption, etc.).
Transfer or ship specimens to approved testing locations following SOPs.

Testing Procedures:
Prioritize testing based on assignments or established priorities, completing tests within defined turnaround times (TAT).
Recognize the need for and adhere to age-specific protocols.

Effectively respond to workflow changes by coordinating multiple tests simultaneously or adjusting work to accommodate STAT tests or fluctuations in volume.

Monitor daily workflow and priorities to ensure service levels are met.

Technical Review and Interpretation:
Review results for completeness, accuracy, and consistency within defined test systems.

Evaluate test results and provide accurate interpretations, correlating with other patient data as necessary.

Perform visual interpretations as appropriate.
Identify unusual test results and complete necessary follow-up actions.
Follow established protocols for notifying critical values and handling result requests.

Troubleshooting and Problem Solving:
Recognize performance issues within the test system and take corrective actions.
Identify unresolved problems that require escalation and take appropriate follow-up actions.
Print pending logs and ensure pending tests are completed or canceled as appropriate.

Post-Test Specimen Storage: Store specimens and related materials according to established protocols for location and duration.
Retrieve specimens and related materials as needed.


Post-Analytical Responsibilities: Execute all aspects of the post-analytical workflow relevant to the specific laboratory section to ensure accurate results are reported within established time frames, specimens are retained appropriately, test results and/or current status are available upon inquiry, and billed charges are correct for testing performed.


Result Verification and Reporting:
Verify results according to procedure.
Perform necessary computer functions for result release.
Generate written reports according to established protocols.
Review electronic or printed reports, recognizing problems and escalating as per protocol.

Report Amendments:
Correct erroneous reports and amend them according to procedure.

Inquiry Responses:
Respond to requests for information following established confidentiality protocols.
Recognize when unresolved inquiries need escalation and take action.

Document and Record Storage:
Store documents and records according to established protocols.

Charge Capture and Billing:
Perform billing and/or enter credits for tests and services as applicable.
Identify billing issues and escalate accordingly.

Universal Responsibilities:
Ensure operational quality: Adhere to written standard operating procedures (SOP).
Operate instruments and equipment according to protocols.
Utilize computers following established protocols; adhere to downtime procedures as required.
Fulfill required quality system responsibilities.
Meet proficiency and competency standards of the department.
Participate in training new employees and students.
Conduct operational reviews of new SOPs.
Engage in new test development, validations, and implementation.
Attend at least one personal development session annually.
Perform other duties as assigned to ensure continued quality operations.

Safety Assurance:
Follow all required safety procedures and utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) as appropriate.
Maintain a clean and organized work area.

Service Excellence:
Answer telephone inquiries when needed, adhering to professional etiquette.
Maintain patient confidentiality, including protected health information (PHI).
Assist patients, visitors, and other contacts as needed.
Qualifications:
Required:

Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, Biology, or a related field qualifying the applicant to take the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification examination.

General MLS or MT (ASCP) Certification or eligibility, or
Categorical BB, C, H, or M (ASCP) Certification or eligibility.
If eligible, must obtain ASCP certification within one year of employment.
