Position Overview

GENERAL OVERVIEW The ECMO Clinical Specialist operates under the guidance of designated physicians and adheres to established policies and protocols sanctioned by the ECMO medical team, the medical executive committee, and the governing board. This role reports directly to department leadership. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Engages as a vital member of the interdisciplinary team in evaluating and delivering comprehensive care services for ECMO patients. Oversees and troubleshoots the ECMO circuit and associated equipment throughout the treatment process. Collaborates with bedside nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated care for these highly complex patients. Undertakes additional responsibilities as required. REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS Must acquire and maintain ECMO specialty certifications as necessary. EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE CRITERIA Candidates must fulfill one of the following qualifications: 1) Certified Clinical Perfusionist by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion with a bachelor's degree in nursing or a related field. 2) Registered Nurse with a current Virginia State license or a valid compact state license; BSN is preferred. 3) Respiratory Care Practitioner with a current Virginia license and active registry as a Respiratory Therapist with the National Board of Respiratory Care; NPS certification is preferred. A minimum of 3 years' experience in a critical care environment is required, with pediatric critical care experience being advantageous. Successful completion of an ELSO-based ECMO training program is mandatory. Strong leadership, decision-making abilities, and familiarity with quality improvement methods are essential. The ability to exhibit a high level of initiative, self-direction, and accountability is crucial. Excellent interpersonal skills are necessary for effective communication with department staff, physicians, nurses, other clinicians, patients and families, as well as other agencies and institutions. CPR and PALS training must be completed within 6 months of hire; ACLS and NRP certifications are preferred. A record of a completed diploma (or equivalent) or academic transcript is required for those involved in laboratory testing. WORKING ENVIRONMENT This role is situated in a clinical patient care setting with minimal exposure to hazards such as excessive noise, dust, or extreme temperatures. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, body fluids, and other conditions typical of the healthcare environment is expected. Moderate adverse working conditions may arise due to the necessity of performing specific patient care activities.
