  • Facilitate the establishment, coordination, and execution of NAGPRA compliance initiatives
  • Act as the representative for the Commonwealth regarding the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act
  • Collaborate with the NAGPRA Task Force to formulate and implement effective policies
  • Ensure respectful and timely consultations for repatriation processes
  • Maintain effective communication and coordination across all tasks related to NAGPRA

The ideal candidate will possess a strong commitment to preserving Native American heritage and promoting dialogue between museums and Indigenous communities. This position requires close collaboration with the NAGPRA Task Force and contributions towards the agency's objectives in repatriation efforts.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate must have substantial experience with NAGPRA regulations and compliance, including documentation, repatriation, and consultation procedures. A thorough understanding of federal NAGPRA laws and meticulous attention to detail are essential for maintaining accurate records and reports. Strong interpersonal skills for building relationships with Native American Tribes and relevant organizations are critical for achieving successful outcomes.

Additional Considerations

Preferred qualifications include expertise in managing archaeological collections, a Master's degree in relevant fields, and familiarity with tribal consultation practices. Knowledge of Indigenous archaeology and Tribal history in Virginia is advantageous.
