This opportunity is with Nuclear & Environmental Services, a segment of HII's Mission Technologies division. Position Overview

We are seeking a Welding/Mechanical Engineer 2 to contribute to the Maritime Operations within Nuclear & Environmental Services. This role will be based in Newport News, VA, and is integral to various operational areas at Newport News Shipyard. The position will focus on engineering and technical support concerning the construction, testing, and functioning of propulsion and reactor plant components.

Key Responsibilities

This role will involve direct support within the Newport News Shipbuilding Weld Engineering group, which is tasked with delivering technical assistance for all welding activities. Specific responsibilities may include:

  • Conducting field investigations to identify, resolve, and enhance welding challenges.
  • Developing and documenting welding procedures.
  • Evaluating processes.
  • Performing metallurgical assessments.
  • Engaging in research and development activities.
  • Preparing technical reports.
  • Conducting audits and surveillance.
  • Reviewing and approving welding procedures from suppliers.
  • Assessing and auditing supplier capabilities.
  • Serving as the welding subject matter expert (SME) for production trades and engineering.
Qualifications
  • Candidate must meet one of the following criteria:
    • Two (2) years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field;
    • Or zero (0) years of relevant experience with a Master's degree in Engineering.
  • Completion of an undergraduate Engineering degree or a related field from an ABET accredited program is required.
  • Experience in welding and manufacturing is essential.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance is necessary.
  • Candidate must be a U.S. citizen.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Welding Engineering Technology, Materials Joining, Metallurgical Engineering, or Material Science Engineering is preferred.
  • Familiarity with non-destructive testing (NDT) methods such as visual inspection (VT), magnetic particle inspection (MT), dye-penetrant inspections (PT), eddy current inspections (ET), ultrasonic inspections (UT), and/or radiographic inspections is advantageous.
  • Experience with US Navy nuclear propulsion plants is a plus.
Physical Requirements

This position may require working in various environments, including office, industrial, shipboard, or laboratory settings. Candidates should be capable of climbing ladders and working in confined spaces with varying temperature conditions.
