About the Opportunity

The City of Cedar Rapids is seeking a skilled Parks and Recreation Communications Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our Communications department, you will be responsible for developing and implementing marketing and communication strategies for City programs and services.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement data-driven communication strategies to engage with the community and promote City programs and services.
  • Serve as the primary communications liaison for the Parks and Recreation department, providing critical and time-sensitive information to residents and media through press releases, newsletter articles, photos, videos, and multimedia content for digital platforms.
  • Administer social media channels, monitor and respond to inquiries via social media and email, and develop and proofread documents, presentations, newsletters, magazine stories, website content, letters, photos, videos, and other communications materials.
  • Respond to media inquiries and coordinate requests as appropriate, and evaluate the effectiveness of services and programs of assigned departments and divisions.
  • Promote community outreach events and educational activities, transport items to various city locations, and set up for events.
  • Prepare and monitor advertising budgets and program revenues, and place advertisements for department programming, facility rentals, education activities, and community outreach events.
  • Provide overnight and weekend coverage for emergency-related communications to ensure timely resolution of critical matters.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in English, communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field, and 1 to 3 years of experience in marketing, media relations, journalism, event planning, or communications.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, proficiency with Microsoft Office, and ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations.

  • Knowledge of marketing and brand management principles, public relations principles and practices, effective communication strategies and methods, modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment, social media platforms and strategy, email and digital marketing, and parks and rec operational and administrative management principles and practices.
  • Skills in content writing, social media, website editing, data analysis, video production, graphic design, photography, customer service, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and develop and maintain effective working relationships, maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries, research, collect, analyze, and present information, problem-solve creatively, timely, and effectively, self-motivate, prioritize and multitask projects, and learn new software and technology in a timely manner.
