Agency Clarification

This position is open to current permanent employees of the Department of the Interior, eligible individuals under the Land Management Workforce Act, former Public Land Corps employees, and those eligible under VEOA and CTAP.

Key Responsibilities

As a Lead Park Ranger Supervisor, you will oversee daily operations and manage various collateral responsibilities related to training and leadership. Your role will involve supervising GL-9 permanent and seasonal law enforcement rangers, non-commissioned personnel, and park volunteers. You will be responsible for detecting criminal activities, investigating violations, and making custodial arrests. Additionally, you may prepare and execute warrants, interview witnesses, and detain suspects. Ensuring the completion of detailed written reports will be part of your duties. You will also conduct and supervise the collection of law enforcement, security, and intelligence information pertinent to the park, its facilities, events, mission, or visitors.

You will establish work objectives and guarantee that all personnel receive necessary training promptly. Identifying operational needs and making recommendations to your supervisor regarding programming, budgeting, training, administration, and operational evaluation will be essential. Scheduling patrols to enhance visitor engagement, particularly in problem areas, will also be a priority. You will lead complex law enforcement operations, emergency medical responses, and search and rescue missions while providing emergency medical assistance to park visitors and residents. Furthermore, you will engage in all facets of employee supervision, including performance planning, appraisals, recognition, and counseling.

Employment Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship is mandatory.
  • Appointment is contingent upon a background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Compliance with Selective Service Registration Act for males is required.
  • Subject to pre-employment physical and drug testing.
  • A Type II or higher Law Enforcement Commission is necessary.
  • New hires must designate a financial institution for direct deposit of net pay within 30 days of starting work.
  • Individuals currently holding or having held a General Schedule position under non-temporary appointment must meet time-in-grade requirements.
  • Selectees will be required to carry a firearm during duty and maintain firearm proficiency.
  • Selectees must not have any domestic violence convictions. Appointment is subject to successful completion of a background security investigation.
  • A drug test is required prior to appointment, with random testing for illegal drug use during employment.

Conditions of Employment

  • Prior to appointment, candidates must be determined physically fit by an authorized government physician to perform demanding duties and pass a medical examination.
  • Candidates must pass the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB), which includes agility, strength, cardio, flexibility, and body composition tests.
  • A valid driver's license is required for operating a government vehicle as part of official duties.
  • Compliance with National Park Service uniform standards is required, and a uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Candidates may need to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, and shifts.
  • New employees or supervisors in the Federal government must complete a one-year probationary period.
  • Overnight travel may be required, and candidates must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Applicants must be at least 21 years old.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement unless otherwise stated. Credit will be given for all relevant experience, including volunteer work.

Selective Factors:

  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Type II (seasonal) or higher National Park Service Law Enforcement Commission by the specified date.
  • This position is covered by enhanced retirement provisions, requiring mandatory retirement at age 57 after 20 years of service.
  • Must have a current, valid State Driver's License.

Education

Candidates must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution if using education to qualify.
