Columbia University is seeking a seasoned professional to lead its payroll operations. As Payroll Operations Director, you will oversee the accurate and timely payment of compensation exceeding $3.5 billion to over 34,000 employees. Your responsibilities will include ensuring accuracy and timeliness for over 100 semi-monthly, bi-weekly, and weekly payroll runs, proper withholding and remittance of all withholdings, including federal, state, and local taxes, and garnishments. You will also support internal and external audits and ensure accurate accounting and reconciliation of all related expenses in the PeopleSoft financial accounting system.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee payroll operations and accounting for over 34,000 employees, ensuring accurate and timely processing of payroll.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including tax reporting and filings.
  • Collaborate with the Human Resource Processing Center (HRPC) and Columbia University Information Technology (CUIT) on system enhancements and upgrades.
  • Support various internal and external audits and ensure timely implementation of proposed recommendations.
  • Establish operational protocol and analyze/recommend payroll system setups required for new benefits and/or new collective bargaining agreements.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 7-9 years' related experience in payroll accounting and operations.
  • Advanced degree or other professional certification (CPA).
  • 8+ years' related experience in payroll accounting and operations.
  • At least five years in a leadership role overseeing large-scale payroll operations.

Salary: The estimated salary for this position is between $155,000 and $170,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience.
